987 Manual Gear Oil Change

Kind of along the same lines as my coolant question. Have any 987 owners done a manual gear oil change yet?

I am thinking about doing this a little early. After 5.5 years and about 45,000 miles I may do this prior to winter hibernation, this fall.

If I have this done, I'll only use Porsche fluid. We can buy from Sunset for about $25/quart. How many quarts are required?

What say you 987 owners about doing this service early?

Thanks.

Do it. 5 speed holds 2.4 quarts, the 6 speed holds 3 quarts.

If $75 irks you at all, there’s a company(s) that provides gear oil for racing Porches and teams (if not “the” team). They also have gear oil more than suitable for the street at a much better price. I think it’s also got Porsche's O.K

It’s been awhile since I messed with it so you’ll have to do a little Googling to find it (them) but worth checking out.

Regards, PK

I’d also suggest “Google-ing” a recent post on this site where a regular poster switched back to Porsche’s “high priced” but unique gear oil after encountering shifting issues (a common result) with some of these “other gear oils for racing Porsches”…………..

Has anyone added any Slick 50 Man Trans to their car? I've used it in other cars I have without issue.

Not very long.

Never having done it before on this car, only two things slowed me down. One, the DIY guide I was using kind of misled me on where the fill plug was. Going by the DIY, I was searching in the wrong place for a plug that wasn't there. The second? Waiting for the gear oil to glug-glug-glug down the tubing. I filled it from the top, with a funnel and tubing arrangement. The sluff moved pretty slowly through the tubing. It might speed things up a bit to put the quart containers into a shallow container filled with hot water, to lessen the viscosity.
