After watching the LA Dismantlers show on Discovery Channel, I would think that would be your last resort (dash removal). They had a Boxster completely stripped down and the dash was the last thing they removed

Taking the dash off isn't hard. There are just alot of screws and connectors to keep track of and popping out the defrosting vents feels like you're going to break them, but they're stronger than they feel.

Thanks for the photos. Why was yours being removed? And how does that airbag section release (without a frontal impact )

I took the dash off to get to the structure behind that was creaking when I went up and down the angled curb in my driveway. I wrote up the process and posted it on the board a while ago.

DIY Dashboard Assembly Instructions

The passenger airbag is fastened with a couple of bolts from the bottom side of the dash. Make sure you disconnect the battery and let the car sit for a couple of hours before messing with the airbags.
