The torque converter engages multiple items on the input side of the Tip, including the front spline shaft and pressure pump, not to mention a bearing or two as well. The converter is also quite full of fluid, which is going to come gushing out if you just pull the Tip. With the Tip sitting on the floor, it usually takes some fiddling about just to get everything lined up and correctly engaged, usually by supporting and turning the converter as it picks up each drive. I cannot imagine doing this either correctly or easily with the converter in the car and the Tip on a jack. Get this wrong and both the Tip and the converter are toast. Take the converter out with the Tip and put it back the same way
