Mark, that's usually the very first sign of the IMS getting ready to go out.

Have you tried a new bulb?

The front trunk / boot compartment light failed in my 2000 boxster and the cause was the trunk light switch. I was able to purchase just the switch mechanisim and install it to the trunk latch piece but I don't know if this is the case for all years of Boxsters. I the early Porsche days the switch was a simple spring loaded post but the new switches are plastic rotary pieces...over engineered a bit. If replacing the bulb dosen't fix the problem then it's the switch and it's located at the front of the car where the trunk latch lives.

Here's a link to the switch replacement instructions on RennTech:
http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?/tutorials/article/123-front-trunk-microswitch-replacement/

You'll need to register and perhaps make a contribution to read it.

I can't tell what year car you have, but I think they redesigned the switch in 2001 or 2002. So if you have a 2000 or earlier car (like me) and the bulb is OK, I would bet it is the switch.

I replaced mine about a year ago. It only requires about an hour and moderate mechanical skills.

Yup, I've got the same problem in my '03. Did a search, read the tutorials, but it seemed like too big a hassle. And $43 + $8.00 shipping (this was back in '08) for the new switch seems sort of steep (well, I guess not for a Porsche). Nope, I think I'll just tuck one of those free, Harbor Freight LED flashlights in there somewhere and use it when I need a light.
