thinking about selling my 03 S ?

I have been looking at the 2011 lancer evo mr touring brand new . i did have an evo 8 in the past and hated the cheapness about it but never had one issue with the car it was also a very fast and capable machine.
I am getting sick of all the boxster issues and cost of ownership. the worry of the engine blowing up every time i take it for a drive is ridiculous. I can get a loaded MR touring brand new with leather , nav and the more mature looking touring model , plus a twin clutch tranny for just under 40k . Have bulletproof performance and no worries at all . are any of you guy familar with the evo x and what are your thoughts on this vehicle ?

clickman 01-12-2011 10:02 AM

No car is bulletproof, but if you're constantly worried about the Boxster, it's probably time to move on.

I had a 2009 until I got rear ended by a 19 year old the was texting and totaled out my car.

These cars are awesome and way under rated, I loved mine. It was fast and reliable.I naver had a problem with mine.

A frend of mine just got a 2010 and I was able to drive his and it is way faster then my 2009. I say go for it. :)

Evo X weights like a pig... much bigger and heavier than any of the previous Evos.

The interior quality is still not up to par with its asking price. I was going to buy the Evo X before my box... I sat in it and thought to myself "Why am I paying money for this?"

Evo is like an amateur porn star with bodykit & huge spolier whereas the Boxster is an classy woman. Your choice.

jacabean 01-12-2011 10:23 AM

my biggest gripe with the evo is the cheap interior. nothing like my full leather boxster.

thstone 01-12-2011 12:49 PM

The EVO is a great car for $38,000 - but its not a $50,000 performance car that sells for under $40K.

Instead, its really a $25,000 econo car with $15,000 of upgrades in a turbo engine, sports suspension/wheels/tires, and performance exhaust. Yes, these are factory upgrades and not aftermarket bolt-ons, but there is no changing the econo box starting point.

As long as you know what you're getting and that's what you want, got for it.

xamfed 01-12-2011 01:01 PM

What issues are you having with your S?

jacabean 01-12-2011 01:32 PM

i have had no issues with the car , i actually love my boxster. just would like something brand new that i can afford . A new porsche is out of the question . love the 996 C4S , that will run about 40k for a nice 03 . with no warranty and has all the issues the boxster engine has. if you are going to buy at that price you should be able to drive with no worries . you don't get that with porsche.

jbs986 01-12-2011 01:32 PM

Wow, some of the comments on here crack me up,Sorry guys but the Evo's 0-60 time is 4.7 Sec. and it is an AWD car, That is fast.

The car is fast and handles great it will embarrass a Boxster on and off the track. As far as it being a pig,There is a lot of cars that are heavier then my Boxster and there are ones that are lighter, like my Lotus Elise it weighs 1,850 lbs doe's that make my Boxster a pig?

Bottom line is it is a great car for the $$$ The new 2011 Mustang GT has a 0-60 time of 4.4 Sec and 1/4 mile time of 12.40 it is a lot faster then a 2011 Boxster S for $25k less then the Boxster S. Porsche can do better but thay do'nt.Shame on Porsche and the piece of $#!% M96 motor.

jacabean 01-12-2011 01:37 PM

it's not that i don't love the porsches , i'm just starting to think i can not afford them. i bought my evo 8 brand new , that car would smoke my boxster in every aspect of performance. except for the the fun to drive category . The Boxster is by far one of the most fun cars to drive on the planet.

Wow how low has Porsche's reputation sank to consider "upgrading" to a Mitsu for peace of mind & reliability! I understand your thought process & I have thought about buying a EVO so I have a sedan to go with my boxster, bought a IS350 because of Lexus reputation & EVO depreciation. Just got IS350 back from dealer doing 3rd recall in 3 yrs., this time valvesprings recalled. I also agree with you that the Boxster is more fun to drive so I would just get your IMS bearing upgraded & enjoy the Boxster. It will be more cost effective to upgrade the car you have than to buy anything new. :)

Apples and oranges...I don't get it...I would understand as a daily driver, but as a replacement?

Flavor 987S 01-13-2011 10:20 AM

I'd rather have a broken Porsche than a well running Evo.

Because "Evo's 0-60 time is 4.7 Sec. and it is an AWD car, That is fast."

Fast doesn't mean it's enjoyable. Enjoyment is harder to measure and with the new generation kids raised on Playstation, cars like Nissan GT-R is desirable because it fixes all the mistakes you make with AWD & computers and you can brag to your friends how fast your car can do in the Ring.

jacabean 01-13-2011 01:45 PM

think about it ? if you had to replace your Boxster with a reasonably priced performance oriented car what would you choose? The new 1 series M coupe looks good but that will be 50K . evo's , STI what else is there ?

SeaNile31 01-13-2011 01:55 PM

I think the fun factor of the Boxster is damn hard to beat. Sure you can find faster, more gadgets, etc., but overall these cars are awesome and a total blast to drive.

Idaho Red Rocket 3 01-13-2011 02:11 PM

I've been a die hard year round motorcyclist for over 40 years. I have 3 in my garage now. I have 2 Triumphs, a Rocket 3 and a Thunderbird Sport and then I have nice little Kawasaki 250 Duel Sport for putting around in the mountains.

Since I bought my first Boxster, I have been very bad to my motorcycles. They often sit in the garage crying and begging me to ride them. I do ride them, just not as much since the Boxster. I call my Boxster the 4 wheeled motorcycle. I now have 2 Boxsters. They are just that exciting and impressive to drive. I can imagine that only a good Ferrari would be more fun to drive then a Boxster. (Although, I hear Ferraris are a maintenance nightmere to own.)

Soetekouw 01-13-2011 03:57 PM

I have also been thinking about getting rid of my 2007 S. As Jacabean said, I am also getting sick of all the Boxster issues and the cost of ownership. Jake has implied so many times (although not in the same exact words), that the engine is crap and it will fail either through IMS, RMS, water pump, or by just looking at it wrong. Looking at it wrong may not be the right words, because probably what disappoints me most about the Porsche is that you don't get to see the engine unless you tear half the car apart.

If it wasn't for the depreciation hit I would take ($70K to approx. $24K in trade, in less than 4 years), this car would be out of my garage. But I have really tended to this car over the past 4 years with meticulous detail and care; keeping it scratch free and maintenance serviced, that it has become part of the family. I especially like the interior quality and finish. So, what to do? I have never worried more about a car's dependability, until this one.

I do understand that no car/engine is bulletproof, but the cost of problems, or mistakes (if you do your own work) is much higher in a Porsche as compared to similar sport cars. There will be a change in vehicles for me, in the near future.

In the meantime, I do enjoy other forum members comments on what type of vehicle they own, or what they are planning to buy next. It'll give me a good basis for my replacement car. EVO? (never heard of it - I'll need to look it up).

Some of you guys are spending WAY too much time worrying.

The Boxster was just rated as one of the Top 10 Cars to Reach 200,000 Miles by Fortune Magazine based on 10 years of reliability data collected and analyzed by Consumer Reports. It beat out most Honda's and Toyota's.

Here is the opening statement:

"According to Consumer Reports' latest reliability survey, all cars and SUVs made by the Stuttgart, Germany-based automaker are rated average or better when it comes to longevity.

One car in particular--Porsche's $47,600 Boxster--stands above the rest. It has the best predicted reliability of any vehicle tested by Consumer Reports this year."

The prediction is based on the previous 10 years of owner survey data collected by Consumer Reports. This is about as good of an unbiased opinion that can be found.

Of course, this doesn't mean that engine (or transmission, or ...) failures don't occur, it just means that they aren't statistically significant (the number of failures is small compared to the total number of vehicles sold over the years).

Reggie&Sue 01-13-2011 06:56 PM

The Evo is a GREAT engine, tranny, and suspension - but wrapped in Boy Racer body, and a cheap plastic interior. However, if you want to go fast for relative few bucks then it's a good fit. I've owned a few econo-racers and motorcycles in the last few years, and none has provided the overall satisfaction and driving enjoyment as my Boxster 00 S.

I'm also surprised about the amount of angst over "perceived" reliability issues. Maybe folks are reading too many sour grapes reports on the Net, and then extrapolating these potential problems to their own Boxsters ? I've had several issues with my S, but all is forgotten and forgiven when I hear the Porsche wail at 4-6 K RPM.
