looking at 4 boxsters on a car buying trip. 03 s w.12,3kmi pvt party $24995-thats higher than retail in kelly/nada!!...03 s w. 22kmi pvt party $24,000 also higher than retail!!...dealer 02 s w.20,500mi $20995 -in the nada ballpark ,lower than kelly..finally 03 no s with 13kmi for $19,700-that is the best value compared to kelly/nada....none have any 'packages'..any ideas?

Those prices do sound high. I've been told that because of Cash for Clunkers, the used car market is lacking in product. I didn't think that was possible but I've been contacted by my local Toyota dealership and offered $15,500 for my 2004 Sequoia Limited 4x4. I've never had a dealership call and offer to buy any vehicle before.

Again, I think those prices are a little steep. If they're not, it might be time to sell.

Do you have a budget in mind? Are you set on 986 vs 987?

For reference, I just picked up an 05 S with 20K miles for $26,500.

They called and offered you that because they wanted to sell you a new one.

especially given the time of year, weather, etc. Plus the sellers seem to be asking a premium for low mileage cars when those may not be the best cars having sat around most of their life. I like a 6k/yr car that has been very well maintained and the seller motivated by some life event. These aren't collector cars and probably never will be...too many made.

Use one of the craigslist crawlers and look around. http://www.rideslist.com/ is an example of one that enables you to list boxsters say in any of several dozen markets.

Take your time, know the market, drive several, pounce on the right deal. Good luck.

tight credit equal fewer banks willing to loan. Fewer loans means people are holding onto cars longer. Fewer used cars up for sale equals higher prices.
Many of those who can qualify for a loan are being prudent and not selling their babies unless they get a pretty penny for it.

Good time to buy new.... not so good to buy used.

Which is what this economy needs now because we have a hell of a lot of pent up demand from a 3 year recession. But its not really a recession more of a loss of optimistic credit standards that kept people consuming for 5 years when their falling incomes and negative savings rates didnt justify it...but that's another subject.

But that splits people into two camps those who can afford the loan risk (and have spotless credit) for buying a new car and those who aren't willing to gamble and will stick with the old car. The latter group are keeping mechanics and auto parts stores busy. Modest income people flipping cars every 4 years is not going to be as common as it once was.

Asking prices are high.

Selling prices are low.

The sellers list high but drop the prices to move the iron.

Same for new cars. At Rusnak Porsche in Pasadena, CA, they have a 2011 Boxster list price (with all options) at $73K. Sale price is $59K.

^ keep yer eye on that one. Bet you goes below $55K. That area is in trouble.

Non Porsche car dealer. Car was a local one owner car with traceable service and records from the same Pcar dealer that sold the car in the same town which the car was traded in at.

I shopped for about a month and found this one immediately but they were asking $29,000.

all still visible on Craigslist (Raleigh). So there are some out there where the seller is anxious to move em. Trick is to find that situation. He seems to drop by $500 or so.
