Hey guys and gals,

I'm prety sure that this has already been addressed in a thread, but I couldn't find it searching...

So I just had my oil changed and had the shop look into the CEL light that was on. I had it read a couple of months ago and it was a 420 code, which I believe is the O2 sensor.

When I picked up the car, the owner tells me that there were two codes- one for each O2 sensor. He quoted me a little over $1,000.00 to replace both sensors.

Is this quote unreasonable? Is this a DIY job if I have a mechanically inclined friend help me? Any suggestions for other shops in the area that may charge less?

This is for a 1999 Boxster.

$1000 to replace TWO sensors??? I may be way off, but wow! They're about $138 each on pelican parts (no connection) I'll replace your O2 sensors for you for the remaining $700! It's not that hard of a job. Do a search and there will be lots of DIY info.

Do you know/trust your current shop?

If you decide not to do the job DIY, give us a call.. Its more like a 350.00 job!

Also, if this shop didn't know their way around the M96 they could have swapped the sensor leads or left the connections loose. Its odd for a pair of )2 sensors to go out suddenly on an engine that hasn't had intermix.

We are just up the road from Atlanta, in the Mountains.. We are closed through till the 3rd, but would be glad to help you upon our return to business as usual :-)

then visit your local muffler shop and for about $50 and 5 minutes on the lift they will change it. Mine even reset the CEL. Been there, did it twice...one on each side. Same price two different shops in two different states. 5 minutes. Or egt under the car and do it yourself.

BUT the 420 code is not an O2 sensor code but a catalytic converter code. The flow chart for curing it says cure all other faults first. Any oiled air filters ever used? Checked the throttle body? AOS good? What would cause a CAT to fail?

http://sites.google.com/site/mikefocke2/oxygensensors will give you part numbers, sources, how-to, etc. if it turns out to be a faulty reading sensor.

I got the p0430 code was hopeing it was the o2 sensor so I replaced them
cost me 89.00 each at auto zone and it took me about 45 min. so any shop
that charges you more then an hours labor are riping you off

Thanks for the info guys! Yeah, I figured the price was pretty high...

I might just save up and make the trip to Cleveland sometime in Mid-January. I actually went to school at Truett McConnell so I am familiar with the area- not too bad of a drive for me either.

The guy said that replacing the O2 sensors might clear up the code for the catalytic converter, so I think I'll start with that. On a budget, of course...

Odd about the pricing though. This is a pretty reputable shop and I was referred by co-workers. Maybe business is slow and he's trying to make up for that.

Charged me $170 for an oil change today- is that too steep as well?

befor you buy o2 sensor's switch the right side with the left side and clear the code if the code come back it is your catalytic converter not your o2 just did that
and had to order a right side cat cost me 418.00 +shiping and core charge

I replaced all 4 of my O2 sensors with the cheap ones you splice in and not very good luck with those, engine light came on again and is still giving me O2 sensor codes.
