I just got one, and was searching the private and non porsche dealer market for a while, with little success at finding a quality car. I ended up buying one from a porsche dealer 99 with 23K miles on it, as it was a trade in on a new 997 and was used only as a cottage car.

The price was significantly more, but I got brand new tires, brand new rims, and most importantly for me I got the 2 year warranty from Porsche which basically covers everything a new car warranty does, including RMS, air conditioning, all electrical motors, etc.

I think the warranty was a big selling feature, even though I probably paid 3-4K over what I could have got it privately but hey, it was pastel yellow and that was the colour I was after, and for some reason it is extrememly hard to find.

When shopping private be careful as if you buy the wrong car you may be in for some hefty repairs.

I value the warranty and it is tempting me towards CPO somewhat but have also been looking at Warranty Direct. They look like a good outfit but I do find their pricing a little odd.

For example, I requested quotes on an 01 and an 03, the price was within $200 even though the 03 has nearly two years of factory warranty left. I asked if the 4 years I buy would start after my factory warranty ran out, they said no, it starts from the date of purchase.

Seems a little odd in that case as I'd only really be getting two years of cover, I'm sure while it was covered by Porsche they'd want me to have them cover repairs. They argue it's cheaper to buy it sooner before rates go up, car gets older etc, it doesn't seem to make that much difference though in reality.

My 97 was a tip too, and I loved, I do get tease from time to time for drive a porsche with auto. I've test drove 05 base and 00 S last week in stick, both are very fast and fun, but i think tip still better for me. But it's not on top of my concern I can settle for tip or stick as long as the car is in right condition. My ideal color would be artic silver, or white exterior, light grey, or red interior with grey top. I have liptonic and 18in carrera ready to go. It has to have heated seats and full service record unless it's under cpo warranty. I've been looking everywhere and found most of deals are in SF or FL. I did found a 00 S with 57k miles and they wanted 26000 in good condition.

cars.com can be very handy also. It lists cars from a myriad of sources and you can tell it how far you're willing to travel.

Opinion on a 2000 Base

I just drove a 2000 Base CPO car with 12,500 miles. Lapis blue, tan interior, looks in great shape. The fromt is all covered with those transparent protector sheets. There are a couple of small stonechips round the rear wheel arch and a few scuffs on the right rear as though someone tried to sit on it, they look as if they'd polish out. One of the chips is through the paint but is smaller than a pea.

Not much by way of options, rear screen and traction control. Dealer is asking $26,500 as a CPO with 2 yr warranty, what do you think?

I agree, but when I see an 03 for around $29k with nearly 2 years warrantly on it I start to wonder. Then if I consider say an 02 plus an after market 4yr warranty for about $2.5k

I hate shopping for cars. I wish I didn't like the darned things so much! )
