Repairing nasty paint chip

Have picked up a nasty chip (down to the metal) below one of the air intakes on the Box:

What's the preferred home repair method? I have vague recollections of some kind of anti-rust treatment, perhaps before a little primer and touch up paint. Also, do I dare try to smooth the edges of the paint before treating and painting?

Thanks.

A local supplier here in NJ has some great repair articles - including paint chips see link: http://store.carcareonline.com/repairpaintchips.aspx

Is it down to the metal? It doesn't look like it from the picture, but it's hard to tell.

How perfect do you want it to look? You could just fill it in with color and barely see it.

You could instead, put one coat of color on, then a few coats of clear, wet sand it smooth, then polish it and wax it.

It all depends on how far you care to go.

Yes, it is down to the metal. I'm mainly concerned with preventing rust, not the cosmetics.

Anyway, thanks for the link, just what I was after.

give chips-away a call. my local chips away agent did a cracking job on a deep chip on my lapis blue box, all up, about 60 quid.
