gas tank shuts off

I have noticed this a couple of times recently, when I went to fill up my gas tank, the pump shut off like it was full, and then I noticed it filled only 5 gallons or so.

What could be the problem ? Does it need service ?

Thanks

Sounds like a vapor lock. O,r you're filling the tank too quickly. Have you tried pumping it less rapidly?

This usually works for me.
