Biggest Difference between 986 and 987
what is it that makes the 987s look so nice? the headlights? the front bumper?
are there and 986 to 987 conversion kits? |
Can o' worms here.
It is all very subjective. But, it seems 986 owners prefer the 986 for it's more 'pure' design. 987 owners seem to feel that it's the design that should have been or at least a natural progression. I'm betting that this thread is gonna have long legs. Cheers! |
Long legs indeed, in the end they are both great cars.

All in the eyes of the beholder.
You want a 987?...buy one, don't waste the money on a conversion. |
About five grand..................

Haha
The old switching tags conversion...maybe I can change my F-150 into a 911!
:) |
I think the body of the 986 is prettier, but the front end, the bumper and lights of the 987 is better in my opinion.
|
The difference is 1.

I think the the 986 is more sculpted than the 987 but the 987 looks very muscular in comparison and your talking almost 10 years between the the sheet metal .

The side vents of the 987 looks like the Toyota MR2. I don't know why Porsche did that. The crease around the fenders in the 987 can go too. I do perfer the front end and headlisghts of the 987. |
In 20 years time, a 986 will be worth more money than the 987 because of its purity of form and those distinctive, unique (for Porsche) fried egg front lights.
Of course that's assuming there are any left with a functioning engine....... |

Actually, I think that Toyota's design treatment of the side intakes was more attractive than Porsche's on the 987. |
I'm going to alienate myself here. But I'm alright with that.
I think it sucks that the only stated differences to this point are cosmetic. I don't really care much about how a car looks. What are the OTHER differences between the two cars? How do they behave differently? |

One could go through from 97 to present and note any and every difference that came with every model year, from interior colors to engine displacements, back to steering wheel spokes, additional airbags, stereo system faceplates, and then to added bracing for larger and heavier optional wheel and tire packages, but I guess that wasn't really what the poster was looking for. I wouldn't mind such a thorough breakdown, though. |

You might want to read the original post. He was talking about looks. |
I guess I interpreted the post differently than just about everyone else. It was titled, "Biggest Difference between 986 and 987." Then in the body asked about cosmetic features. I just didn't realize he was asking only about cosmetics.

Long thread already on this but I think the basics are:
986 - prettier, more delicate, more like the original concept 987 - more muscular, more athletic, more immediate road presence Personally, I think the 986 is the better overall design. The 987 has some fussy detailing, although I really like the rear on the 987 gen 2. |

I think this is sort of funny, I don't see any "menacing" aspects inherent to the 987 body. IMO, the most menacing Boxster, which can also back it's looks with blistering performance = http://www.gizmag.com/go/4188/picture/12212/ The new Boxster Spyder also qualifies for an exotic more determined looking vehicle. |
