Cup holders and damn coffee
 

Am I the only one that have problem of spilling coffee while driving???

986 has cup holders that sit very high to the center of gravity. I am seriously not cornering fast when I have coffee in the car!!! It happens to be every single time!!!

987 holders are even higher, folding out of the panel above the glove box door.
I have two different very nice closing lid mugs that fit the holder well. One is from Starbucks and only holds 16 oz. It also takes two hands to open, so it's not my favorite although it seals best when closed. You rotate the top ring of the mug and the inner top raises and lowers to seal. You can not disassemble this multi piece lid to clean it properly. MY daughter gave it as a gift and I'm sure it was standard Starbucks fare............
The other is a 20 oz. mug that is reduced daimeter for about 2.5" from the bottom, so it fits most standard holders, then it expands to full diameter and has a simple two piece, snap-on lid with a 3/8" diameter drinking hole and very small vent hole and a rotating plate that opens and closes the lid. The rotating plate has a lug on each side so it may be opened right or left handed. I use it right handed for the center cup holder in the Box and left handed for the dash ledge top cup holder in my Fit. The two piece lid also snaps apart for easy, thorough cleaning. I wish I knew where it was purchased.

My Boxster is a pleasure vehicle only. In the years I have owned it I have transported coffee in it via the cupholders twice. I'm two for two on the spill ratio.....no more.

I guess it's time to invest in a Thermos travel mug...

Umm she was on screen for about 5 seconds... got eliminated 15 mins in the show, then I turned the TV off and went to bed. :D :p

I originally made this cup holder for my 914; then made one for the Boxster. It's made from two PVC plubling parts purchased at Home Depot. I took my faorite cup to the store and test fitted seeral fitting to get it right. The bottom fitting is pretty weighty and keeps the holder stable; the upper piece supports the cup. Some sanding to the inside may be needed for the right fit. I used Window/Door caulking to fuse the two pieces together and used the peel-off felt for a liner and base covering.

The cup holder sits on the passenger side floor by the seat adjuster. I don't hae to take my eyes off the road to reach the cup

I've got the '01 where the pop-out cupholders came from the factory mounted high in the centre of the front console, right over the stereo and heat/vent controls.

I had to replace the LCD screen in my HV controls, partly because they're crappy and partly because the previous owners dumped coffee or soda onto them from those useless cupholders.

I did the cupholderectomy, removed and sold the cupholders, and moved the HV controls to where they belonged in the top, above the stereo. Also got rid of the useless CD holder (4 cd's??) and replaced both lower openings with storage cubbies. I then made a custom iPod holder that attaches to one of the cubbies.

An Ultimate Cupholder on the passenger side and we're off to the races!

The puny, half-assed cup holders that Porsche puts in it's cars are a joke on us. The Germans laugh at us for all the ridiculous emphasis we put on cup holders, especially in a sports car.

I don't drink coffee when I drive, I drink when I get to where I'm going. :dance:

Well there you go... she's got some free time on her hands now, so have her sit in the passenger seat and hold your coffee for you! :rolleyes: Seriously though I usually carry my coffee in a spill proof cup and just wedge it behind the passenger seat between drinks. If my Assistant is riding with me, then I'll buy a big cup of coffee and she knows that she's delegated to cup holder service. So far no spills, but I do have to share. :p My air vent cup holders generally hold no more than a 12 oz can.

Yes. Germans believe that a good cup of coffee should be savored slowly, in a cafe along with fresh warm strudel. Savoring a fine sports car should not be diluted or distracted with a cup of coffee.

I guess that's why there's no Tim's in Germany!

I think you guys need to learn how to drive more smoothly. I drive with a 16-ounce soft drink in the standard pop-out cup holder at least once a week, and I've never had an issue.

Okay, so a little homework for everyone... go out and rent the movie "Initial D" and watch it. Then you all need to (like in the movie) put a cup of water in your car's cup holder and learn to drift the car sideways through turns without spilling the water. Every day add just a little more water to the cup until you become a mountain pass drift king!

Sounds easy enough... what could go wrong? Just to be on the safe side though, I think your Assistant should ride along with me in case my cup starts to slip. ;)
