3000 mile driving Holiday round Europe
Part 1.
The Route: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2672005_n.jpg 2865 miles, 8 countries, 26.4 mpg and a burnt head. F**king awesome. Day 1 was a hard drive, 600-odd miles to Wiesen, a little town just south of Davos, Switzerand. Great view out of our Hotel window: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._6747923_n.jpg ..if a little cold...actually bl**dy freezing! The next morning as we headed out of Davos, towards Stelvio, and the one thing we weren't expecting was this: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4077492_n.jpg http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._8195155_n.jpg Once we'd got over the peaks and started heading down again, the view got better. You really can't appreciate the scale from pics: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._5450215_n.jpg The bottom of the Stelvio pass from the Italian was cold and wet and probably safer to go up than down, especially as my Wife was in a little discomfort from yesterday's long drive - and had had open surgery 3 weeks previously, so no arse-out antics, but you do get a strange compulsion to want to drive straight off into the clouds :D First Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jur0RW6JIqw And a view from around 2/3 the way up (6500 feet) http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._2451038_n.jpg The other side was better: Drier, smoother and even brighter, with even more dramatic scenery and drops. Will post the vid later. |
Wow!
Awesome Road-Trip! Great to hear from another Boxster owner from England to!
Love those photographs of Boxstering-in-the-snow! :D |
Looks amazing. I am truly jealous.

Thanks ...it got better :D
Once we'd reached the top the view on the other other side was much, much better. About a third of the way down, there was a fork in the road and rather than bear left (away from the summit and further into Italy) I turned right so in effect heading back round the Mountain to where we;'d started...and so so glad I did. 20 minutes of relentless downhill hairpins, awesome curves, sheer drops and smooth tarmac...apart from the sudden appearance of a Rally Stage! Very similar route to one I was thinking of doing, but not sure I can stomach the petrol costs. May I ask what the petrol side of things set you back?
Loving the look you have on your Box by the way. Thanks |
I was running 98RON which averaged 1.55 Euro per litre at Motorway Service stations. So fuel costs were 490 litres - 759 Euro - £640. Coming off the Motorway where I could, the average price per litre of Super Unleaded dropped to 1.38/l - which would have saved 85 Euro on the whole trip!
For our US friends, that's just over $7.60 a Gallon :) |
