The first thing I would look at is why this guy is willing to sell the car so cheap. I am guessing he knows it is a money pit and knows you are in for a real pain in the ass. I was in the same spot your in. I could have bought a 1998 for 6k. and decided to go with a 99 that was in mint condition for 12,000. I could not be happier because I get to drive the 99 and not just work on the 98.
