Door lock replacement-volkswagon p/n?

In searching through the forums, I found this article about replacing a 99 boxster drivers side door latch with an equivalent VW p/n
https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/tech-tips/porsche-986-996-door-latch-replacement-with-vw-part/151397/page1/

According to pelican parts, the drivers side door latch for my 1997 is Porsche # 3B1-837-015-E

Does anyone know if this maps to an equivalent VW or Audi p/n???

There is a very similar vw p/n and the only difference is the suffex- porsche is 'E' and VW is 'AB' I wish I could determine what the difference is an if it would work.

Any help is really appreciated
J

Have a look in the DIY section. I posted a walk through on this last year

I posted that tip on GRM. I am pretty sure that the front door latches of the MK4 VWs will work, but the only ones I have seen to confirm are '99 Jetta and '98 Beetle. That is the same basic latch mechanism with the 8 pin electrical connector. As in the tip I posted, make sure the one you use does not have the extra plastic that can prevent the 986 locking mechanism from operating, or just trim it back if it does.

brainless71's DIY looks like exactly what you need, but the part numbers can vary quite a bit between year and model and still be functionally the same.
