I posted that tip on GRM. I am pretty sure that the front door latches of the MK4 VWs will work, but the only ones I have seen to confirm are '99 Jetta and '98 Beetle. That is the same basic latch mechanism with the 8 pin electrical connector. As in the tip I posted, make sure the one you use does not have the extra plastic that can prevent the 986 locking mechanism from operating, or just trim it back if it does.

brainless71's DIY looks like exactly what you need, but the part numbers can vary quite a bit between year and model and still be functionally the same.
