is this fo your boxster? you may only need o-rings if you are talking about your plugs. The o-rings shouldn't be more than $30 and i am sure your tubes are fine.

If you have even a modicum of mechanical capability, you can re-ring all the plug tubes your self and pop in some new plugs while you are at it for less than a c note........

I concur with the others... this is not hard to do if you're mechanically inclined. I changed my plugs and it took an hour and a half because I really took my time and the tubes and rings in the tubes are easily removed and right there.

The tubes surround the spark plugs. So you basically just yank them out and replace them with new ones and pop the seals on them and reseat them.

Mine were in there real good due to age and heat.

Are you sure it was the spark plug tubes they quoted you 8 hours labor to replace? It's about a 1.5-2 hour job max if you have a lift. Doing it on the ground with jack stands takes a little longer, but it sure ain't 8 hours.

Here's a step-by-step:

http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_3/Change_Spark_Plugs_%26_Tubes.html

I'm no mechanical genius and I was able to replace the plugs, tubes and gaskets in about 1-1.5 hrs, as I recall. Really a very easy project with basic tools. Plugs were ~$60 total and a set of tubes and inner/outer rings were about $50-$60 total.

Don't be intimidated. You CAN do it yourself if you want to take a little time to learn. As you can see from the link above, this job is totally unrelated to the valve covers.

The dealer is trying to totally screw you. (That's why they call them "stealers.") Their mechanic can probably knock the job out in 45 mins. :-) Seriously, dealers or indy mechanics have their place; I leave the really hard jobs for the pros.

Also, get yourself a Bentley shop manual. It's invaluable. The best $65 you'll ever spend.

Where in NJ are you located?
