Transmission Work

I'm going to be pulling my transmission out and sending it off for a "rebuild" due to 2nd gear grinding issues. I was considering a few companies and am down to two; GBOX and Vertex out of Florida. If any of you guys have had direct experience with either of these companies could you please relate it. Feel free to IM me if you don't want to post something in the open forum. Thanks......Mark.

If you haven't been grinding the gear to long or hard its possible a gear lube change with factory lube may fix it.

the syncros are unique and factory fluid is designed to work best.
try it.
I once used aftermarket lube and after 500 miles second gear would grind
I immediately replaced the lube with factory and the problem went away.
I have also seen grinding from lube that had over 100k on it cause grinding. New lube fixed those problems too.

Even if they cost a bit more I'd definitely go with GBOX over Vertex because they're a gearbox specialist that's been at it for 30 years and they do race car work. Whatever problems your 'box has they've seen 1000 times.

My one customer service experience with Vertex wasn't good. It wasn't about a major rebuild item, but something much smaller and simpler. I was left with a very bad taste in my mouth and with the impression that they're a slipshod outfit. I'd never have them rebuild something as sensitive as my gearbox or any other major component, nor would I buy anything mechanical/electrical that's been remanufactured.

What really sealed it for me was a comment about them from a frequent contributor to this forum (who shall remain nameless) that he'd heard a number of "pretty scary stories" about their rebuild work.

Thanks Frank. I've tried changing the fluid without luck, that would of been a nice easy fix if it would of worked though. I'm likely going with GBOX per stories similar to Gschotlands (I believe there are or were 2 different companies under the Vertex name dealing with Porsche rebuilds, one on the west coast, one in Florida), I spoke to GBOX on the phone and they seemed very direct and knowledgable. They also do all of the builds for Farnbacher Loles Racing. I just wanted to make sure my read wasn't off, thanks guys.
