Oil filter check

I've had my 01 Boxster for 3 years now, and have changed the oil well within the allowed limits. I've always used Mobil1 0w40 (but thinking of changing to Castrol Syntec 5w40 next time).

In prep for putting the car away for the winter, I changed the oil and filter last week. Just for the heck of it, I cut the ends off of the old filter and pulled apart the pleats to see what I could find. I found one tiny metal sliver (really tiny). But there seemed to be a fair number of small dark brown flakes of what seemed to be plastic.

I can only assume that they are from the chain tensioners. Anyone else checked their filter and found the same thing?

I had kind of assumed tensioner wear would take place such that the particles produced would be much smaller...

How many miles do you have on the car? Might be time to replace the variocam tensioner wear pads.

50k miles. Replacing those requires a teardown, doesn't it? Yikes!
