boxster cluster freeze

The cluster will intermittently freeze or switch randomly from mph to km. Previous owner took it to the dealer where he got a quote of $1,500 to fix it. Old owner took a pass but now I want to fix it.

Is it as simple as swapping out the cluster? Should I just take it out and inspect it for a loose wire. (It will work if you tap the top of the cluster..like an old TV fix.) and then if nothing obvious just swap it out with a like model used cluster?

You can pull the display, disassemble it and look for breaks in the solder or dirt which shorts the circuits.

If it doesn't work, you can source a used display from LA Porsche or other wrecker and go to a dealer or indy w/ a PST2 or PIWIS to set the actual mileage (no reputable co. will reset it to a lower mileage).

Compatibility?

I have a 2001 - what cluster(s) will be compatible?
Part number or year/model?

Lots of them floating around - in great condition even in the worst wrecks.
