I'm not a weekend mechanic and there are plenty of threads here for air oil separator (AOS).
i'm told that it is a larger capacity positive crankcase ventilation. Keeps the oil vapor in the crankcase while venting unwanted pressure into the intake manifold.

I did not pay attention to it till it failed. when my car's failed, a white plume of smoke 50 to 75 feet up in the air as wide as the street.
