What is this?

Anyone know what this is?
I tried doing a search for console bose(thinking it was part of the sound system) but couldn't find anything.
There is no speaker inside
it has a number 550.986
Don't mind the holes the guy before me me had a xm radio installed there.
TIA

Looks like an aftermarket mounting system for sat radio or iPod, with the device mounting bracket ripped off the front

Garage
It looks a lot like the factory phone mount, but I have never seen one that looked exactly like that. It could have been a custom subwoofer installation.
The world may never know...

I'd vote for a factory phone mount. I've got one in my 2003 996 and it looks almost exactly like that. Mine has a craddle for a Motorola phone though and then a microphone (not factory) mounted above the steering wheel. I assume the sound output from the phone is hooked up to my stereo. I just haven't had a chance to tear it out yet. I'm thinking I might leave the base there though and mount my Sirius radio to it.

yes I am. The speaker grill looking thing with all the holes in it.
I do think it is an after market phone holder like most suggested.
Thanks
