help: Car just stopped? Clutch?

The wife and i went on a short ride last weekend and towards the end we pulled into a home depot i went to downshift and then nothing? the car would not go in any gear, engine is fine, i had it towed to the local Autobahn service company. They told me it sounded like a clutch? never had a problem with the clutch in any way, the car is a 1999 boxster with 33,000 miles. any ideas before i spend $1,400 on a clutch to find out it is something else? could it be in the hydraulic clutch system? I have my Bentley mannual out looking at the hydraulic system will check in the am?

I just experienced a similar problem. In my case it was a broken clutch hydaulic line. Clutch was fine and in my case the clutch pedal remained completely depressed. If your clutch pedal completely retracts other things to check would be the master or slave cylinders or the clutch. It took a bit a time for me to get the right parts to fix the broken clutch hydraulic line however I'm absolutely amazed how much better my clutch works once it was flushed and bled.

w/ only 33k on the clock, it's much more likely to be a hydraulic line as already mentioned, or the Master or Slave cylinder. Don't opt for a new clutch before checking these. How long has it been since you changed your brake fluid? Longer than 2 yrs? Then you're due. Heavily moisture-saturated fluid could cause what you're experiencing, but you'd also have a very poor brake pedal feel as well since the Boxster shares the same reservoir for both the brake and clutch fluid.

i have never changed the fluid, i am going to pursue the hydraulic option in lieu of a new clutch, thanks for your advice.
