Is There Such A Thing As NO DRONE Aftermarket Boxster S Exhaust Muffler?
 

Is there such a thing as a no drone aftermarket muffler?

If so, please advice where I can source one?

Also, for anyone has experience with one of those ebay modified factory Boxster mufflers, how loud are they? And are there any cabin drones between 2500-3000rpm?

I've been researching this for nearly two years. If you want no drone whatsoever, you have to do a complete exhaust system swap with a matched system of headers, high flow cats and muffler.

I cannot remember the name of the company who produces it, but there is a system out there that has no drone and is $4000.00.

Evidently a nice and loud and resonance free exhaust doesn't come cheap.

But that modded muffler will give you more sound without any drone.

Every exhaust has drone,even the OEM,just a matter of it is noticeable or not.

Come on now, don't be like that. Everyone knows what I mean. Obviously I was referring to noticeable cabin drones.

Agreed with every exhaust has drone.

Your stock one does, its just not loud/annoying.

Im not 100% positive about this, but fabspeed is supposed to have little drone because the two mufflers are connected to one another.

Yes that's just like the ebay muffler I posted the link above. I wonder how much louder it is compared to the OEM Porsche sports exhaust.

PSE...definitely,positively no drone(noticeable drone=it's all relative- but almost all people who has the PSE system can/will attest to that, myself included). IMO, the louder you go, the more chances of increased drone. The Pedro exhaust hack does NOT have the same sound of the original PSE(check & compare in YouTube). The Pedro hack is waaaay louder than the PSE. GBP=500./ AU= 1,115.00 for 2 bypass hack pipes is asking an Arm and a Leg.

Thanks. I like the idea of these ebay mufflers since I don't want to modify my own, would be handy when it comes to resale of the car.

I installed a Dansk "sausage" muffler and had some drone at about 2.8K RPM, but after I later installed headers (retaining the second set of stock cats), the drone disappeared. I guess there must be something about the difference in resonance between the muffler and headers that canceled each other out. Not really sure, and don't really care - all I know is that I don't have the problem now.

Drone definitely has something to do with the weight of the muffler and its ability to resonate noise.

More weight = less drone.

Just look at how heavy the stock & PSE mufflers are.

On the other hand, a straight pipe is the lightest and has maximum drone.

As far as I know this mod is (almost) drone free and sounds great

I went buy the local muffler shop on Friday to see if he could do the PSE mod on my '03. He was uncomfortable trying to use anything bigger than 1" for the bypass. He was going to call around to see if he can find the pipe and 90's necessary. Hopefully I will hear something today and get the mod done soon. He is pretty sure he can mock it up and install it without droping the muffler. That would be nice.

I like it, no drone....but I was surprised....I thought it would be louder. Very nice sound at 2700 rpm, and then again above 4k. It also has a meatier rumble at idle.

Here is what I did:

Removed muffler, bought 1/2"copper pipe to bend (to get the shape).

Took that to custom muffler shop, tried to get stainless....just couldn't find what I wanted, so I used the 1 1/2" "alumanized" pipe, he bent it.... I took those home, started forming new pipes to fit, plus cut holes (3/4"- 1") in ex. pipe before muffler. After that, took everything back to the muffler shop, he welded, I took everything home and installed. Cutting the holes with the dremel took a lot of "bits" and a lot of hours (6). I think if I would have made the holes in the existing pipes closer to 1 1/2", the sound would be louder, but like I said, I am happy with it.

I did get a price from a shop to do it $500+!

My cost was probably $60-$70 in parts ($20 for dremel bits....get a lot!)

I have post this numerous times, if you do a search. My car, an '02 S was in need of some sound. I found a modified muffler from another poster, which was done by Oettle's in Germany. Pedro has a similar mod, except for the placement of the bypass pipes.

My car also benefits from an Evo Hi-Flo intake and Fabspeed bypass pipes. Sound is very good; low rumble at idle, GT3 like scream at 3800 rpms. No resonance at highway speeds.

This is one of the best bang for buck mods you can do for your car. Sorry about the crappy pics...best I have at the moment.

I also have had the Pedro muffler mod done to my car. If you are concerned about resale buy a used muffler off of ebay, print out Pedro's instructions and take it to a muffler shop, that's what I did. IIRC I was charged $125 for the labor and it took them about 3 hrs. Of course, I am in the city of Chicago and there are small muffler shops on every corner.

But, even with a little higher labor charge and a used stock muffler and you will still be well under what they are charging on ebay. When you sell your car, switch back to your original muffler and sell the modified one on ebay for probably close to what you paid in total. It's a win/win. :cheers:

Does anyone have the NHP muffler from Maxspeed Motorsports?
The eBay ad (Item number: 360090180636) claims "no cabin drone".
Reviews I have seen on their headers have been pretty positive, but I haven't seen a comment on the muffler and cabin drone.

I have the NHP muffler on my car and I do not notice a drone and there definitely is no resonance. Of course I have different headers and the mid-pipes with hi-flow cats so the drone may be masked by the shear difference in volume. :)

panameras, i got this info on another forum. it maybe worth checking out ..seems like high quality, a bit louder but not obnoxious as per owner's claim..
