One Scary 996!

I was watching Supercars Exposed on Speed Channel and they had a super car shootout with a Lambo, specially prepped GT-40, Viper, Pantera, Vette and a couple of all-wheel-drive Porsche's.

Alex Djordjevic in his 996 turbo (hp, he won't say) took out a 1000hp Ford GT 40/Twin Turbo (John Hennessey prepped). If you watch "Pinks" on Speed Channel, Alex is the guy that had the Woolly Mammoth. The real race was Alex's 996 vs a Techart GT 997 RS (620hp). The course on an airport tarmac that went down about 1/4 mile and went through opposing chicanes (light bulb) and into a 180 degree wide left hand sweeper then ended with a 1/2 mile drag race to the finish.

What you have to see is the drag race to the finish, the 997 was well ahead by 6 car lengths coming out of the sweeper and deep into the boost...then the 996 came on and blew by him and won by 4 car lengths, it was scary fast! The commentator said he must have been doing 190 at the line. If anyone can watch this episode that final race is well worth it. I feel proud to own a car with the heritage and racing respect Porsche has.

Well, now that I've told you what I saw you can watch it for yourself. I searched the net and found Alex posting on YouTube and he said to go to this site, enjoy. The video is high quality and shot from a view not shown on the actual show. Alex is in the Grey one, you guys might want to add this site to your favorites. http://www.speedandmotion.com/pages/speedshootout/vralexvstechart.html

P.S. I found another vid from him doing speed runs...http://www.youtube.com/user/VRAlexander, good stuff.

You mean Speed Channel actually had something on that was not NASCAR related?

I was doing a "stay vacation" the past 2 weeks and managed to watch the speed channel a ton! I agree that shootout was awesome and neat to see it come down to 2 AWD 911's. Makes me consider upgrading down the road!

996 Power Update

This is off the blog about the power that 996 is putting out from Alex;

"My car is well over 1000hp"

"I get full boost (thanks to the custom ceramic Impeller turbos) by 3300RPM's with a 8000RPM redline. The setup is 'one off' and completely custom. If you setup the brakes and suspension, 1000whp is devastating on the road course."

And that might not be the whole story...
