New to the Boxster Family

Let me say Hi to everyone. This Porsche is all new to me. I have a 2000 Boxster s 3.2 6 speed with 40,000 on it now.When bought it it had 37,000. I have all maintance records of it all with just rutine oil and stuff like that nothing major. I have read a a lot on this forum about engine going bad quick. Is this a if or is it a real thing that is a fault of porsche. I know they are not cheap to fix and I can handle that ok but just don't want to put money in a bank that won't serve me right. They been using 5 w 40 and I seen where all were using 0w40 so is this a good byecar orkeep. It runs like a top now with no visable problems with in site. What are some thoughts on this....

Welcome to the Forum!

You should absolutely continue to maintain your Boxster. Boxster that are driven often (aren't stored in the winter) and are well maintained are often less likely to have problems, like an engine failure. And with 40k miles, your chances of an engine failure decrease drastically, I have only heard of two engine failure happening above 40k miles. The oil you're using if fine, it's what I use. The 0w40 and 5w40 are just for different temperature ranges.

Welcome to the family! This car is a lot of fun to drive aint it?

As far as I know engine failures are rare and hardly happen to cars that are well maintained and driven often. It's best to leave a little money aside to maintain your Boxster, but I wouldn't be too worried about engine failure because it will just ruin your sleep at night for no reason.

Well it will be driven, I believe if I bought something it is going to be use. I do like to keep a well kept vehicle and keep a little money aside for it. Never know what might happen.

Welcome aboard.

I'm no mechanic, so I can't give you a lot of info beyond what has already been said. I do, however, also have an "S" 3.2 that just turned over 40k on the odometer. (Happens to be an '01.) Soooo...hopefully neither of us will have problems! I kind of waffled on the drive vs store-for-the-winter issue, initially leaning (reluctantly, since this is a car I love to drive) towards the storage option. So, while I have been made a little nervous by the engine failure discussions, the commonly-held belief that driving is better than storing has been welcome news to me. (I still don't drive her when there's actually snow on the road, especially if the road crew is out spreading salt.)

Mine runs like a top and has been wonderful to own and drive. I don't lose sleep worrying about what might happen.

Unfortunately, for IMS, there's no data that suggests driving the car all year around is any less likely to have the failure occur. There's also absolutely no data that suggests a mileage correlation to IMS failure. I've seen new, 20k and 80k engines with IMS failures. There's also no correlation between maintenance and IMS failure.

The only thing that seems to be common is that the cars were being driven sedately, usually in traffic, when things start to get noisy and the car begins to run very poorly.

So again, unfortunately, there are no known preventative measures that can be taken to avoid IMS failure. So you can live in fear, or enjoy your car and get on with life.

IMS failure doesn't affect pre-'01 Boxsters. Only Boxster made after 2001 with the redesigned (aka. - quieter but faulty) shaft have IMS failures. That isn't to say IMS can't happen on a pre-'01 but it is extremely rare.

Read the late Jim Pasha's article in Dec Excellence. With input from Jake Raby and others it cover the M96 problems very well.

Somebody posted a link to it. Search Pasha and Raby and RMS.
