Unfortunately, for IMS, there's no data that suggests driving the car all year around is any less likely to have the failure occur. There's also absolutely no data that suggests a mileage correlation to IMS failure. I've seen new, 20k and 80k engines with IMS failures. There's also no correlation between maintenance and IMS failure.

The only thing that seems to be common is that the cars were being driven sedately, usually in traffic, when things start to get noisy and the car begins to run very poorly.

So again, unfortunately, there are no known preventative measures that can be taken to avoid IMS failure. So you can live in fear, or enjoy your car and get on with life.
