Who has 19" wheels on their 986 ?

I am considering buying some 19" wheel to replace by 18"er's. According to the Tech Q&A section of the PCA.org site this will lead to rubbing of the tire on the wheel well liners. So far, Gary BR has said he has not had that problem. So I just wanted to get a few more people to tell me how they like their 19" wheels.

Thanks

cbenitah 04-03-2008 11:02 AM

Love my 19"s better than my 18"s. I am replacing my wheels with a different set shortly and still using 19's. Ride wise is excellent....

986speedster 04-03-2008 11:07 AM

I did mine too. My sig shows my old wheels. Car is in th ebody shp fixing a couple of dings and putting painting the turbo spoiler. Should have it back this weekend. I got nervous at first because I have the Eibach Pro kit lowering springs, and 19z looked so big. But they fit great, no clearance problem. And I feel no difference in ride quality from my 17z. Go for it. They look hot too!!!

Grizzly 04-03-2008 11:16 AM

I have 19s also. The car came with 17s. The PO put 18s on it. I stepped up to the 19s. A couple more owners and it'll be ridin' on 24s, I guess.

Seriously, I love them. They ride well. They do not rub and they look just right.

I love your wheels. What brand are they? Great pics of your car too. You are good with photography. If I ever sell my car I'm having you take the pics!

I love the way my 19's look on my 986. I went from 17" to 19", and can feel the difference in the form of a more harsh ride. Would I go back to the 17's, or 18's? No way!

Those are my next wheels, could you please show more pics??

2000SoCalBoxsterS 04-03-2008 05:15 PM

Found the actual Q&A from the PCA.org Tech section that made me think 19" wouldn't work:

Q: "Champion makes a 19" for the Boxster. Would I risk suspension damage on my stock "S" and/or should i upgrade the suspension? If not, what negative attributes should i be concerned w/ a 19", other than the stiffer ride?

A: "They will rub even after modifications to the front wheel wells and eventually go through them. The 19" wheels are more susceptible to bending and curb checking do to the low profile tires. These are just some of the problems with the 19” wheels on a Boxster . Needless to say Porsche does not recommend that they be installed on one either."

Scott Slauson - PCA WebSite - 11/29/2004

I'm glad I was able to check with you guys before basing my decision on this Q&A.

Thanks, I look forward to buying my 19" wheels relatively soon.

cbenitah,

Here you go. Please post some pics when you get them installed.

Car looks awesome! Especially from this angle. I'd like to see the same angle with the hardtop on.
I may vote this car in the top 3 on 986forum.com!

986speedster 04-03-2008 08:12 PM

I read the same tech advice from them, and then talked to guys from here. glad I didnt listen. No issues at all.

Gary in BR 04-04-2008 08:15 AM

I have 19s and my car is lowered 2inches and have never had a rubbing issues.

squeak 04-04-2008 10:30 PM

19's on mine also...love 'em!

Cheers, Gord.

jonnycool 04-05-2008 08:39 AM

mine seems to run much smoother on 19"s, i think it's cuz they are alot heavier than the standard ones?!?!

jonnycool 04-05-2008 08:45 AM

but saying that, i'd much rather have the 17"s on for racing around, you get alot more feel with them

97 Boxster 05-09-2012 03:50 PM

I know this is an OLD thread but I am considering some 19" Lobster Claw wheels as a different look/upgrade from my 17" Chrome Turbo Twist wheels. Can I get some thoughts/feedback on those of you that have HAD 17's and now ride on 19's? Would like to know your thoughts.

Thanks for allowing me to resurrect an old thread.

I am looking at these wheels tomorrow. Cant wait to see them in person and see if I can work out a deal.

Chief 05-09-2012 06:17 PM

I gave those some serious thought too. :)
Lobsters in black will look nice on your car

I'm thinking more about these

997 Carrera III

Chief, the plan is to do gloss black on the car. I just put the stripe on over the weekend last week and once the tires need replacing (later this year) I will then go to the powdercoating. Should make a huge difference but for now the look will be sweet.

papasmurf 05-11-2012 08:01 AM

The lobster claws will look great...

they are one of my favorite factory wheels and I think they do look good in black as well...I have been thinking about selling my 18" SCII's and getting some of the GT2 RS/GT3RS clone wheels (without the center locking hub of course)...there is a rendering of a "proposed" 981R that someone created that is silver with the black rocker decals and black GT2RS style rims with a polished lip and it looks amazing. Not sure how well that would translate to the more dated 986 body.

juicepro 05-11-2012 09:02 AM

Damn, this thread has me wanting to get some 19"s what do you guys think about these.

I would say you are a bit brave powersports. Are there a lot of potholes in Romania?

I remember watching the UK Top Gear once and they proclaimed the best road in the world existed in Romania. It will be a dream of mine to take my car there one day.

Juicepro, those are hot looking. I liked the Lobsters because they will be easy to clean. I will never go back to 17's on this car. Love the look way too much. I just added 10 years to my 97 :D.

Chief 05-13-2012 05:57 AM

Looks great!

Gonna leave the calipers silver?

Also, is your rear window tinted?

97 Boxster 05-13-2012 06:08 AM

Rear window is tinted Chief. I just redid the calipers last year and they are so clean I was thinking of leaving them. What would you do? Red, Black or something else?

97 Boxster 05-13-2012 06:11 AM

These were a killer deal Chief. Asking price was $1200 and he had them sitting around for 7 weeks so I offered $800. He countered with $850. Brand new Continentals on the front and 75% Contis on the rear. I then sold my 17's for $400 so total cost to me was $450. Not a bad deal I think since I was needing new rears on my 17's and that was going to be just shy of $400 next week so it all worked out.

Yes we have plenty of potholes unfortunately...in about one month i will defenitly take my car to a spin on the Transfagarasn Road the one in the Top Gear, i will ask a buddy to take some photos and put them here for your enjoyment :)

Chief 05-13-2012 06:25 AM

They look good as is. I'd leave them as well. ( Just curious :) )

That is a killer deal! Sounds like someone got a deal on yours too!
I'm pretty convinced that I want to go with the thin spokes. Its just that I like the Sport Designs I have now too.

Rough looking neighborhood . I hope you have wheel locks !

RandallNeighbour 05-14-2012 04:45 AM

He lives in a nice suburb. Me? I live near downtown Houston and my cars would be stripped if I didn't lock them in a garage at night.

Actually, auto crime is bad all over town, even in the nicest Houston neighborhoods. It's our proximity to the border combined with economic conditions.

RandallNeighbour 05-14-2012 04:31 PM

97, I notice a distinct drop in my off-the-line performance with my 18s on the car vs my 17 inch turbo twists. I bet 19s are even heavier. Did you compare the weight of your old rims and tires with the new?

Our modest 2.5 liter engines need all the unsprung weight savings they can get!

RN, I can not tell much. The Seat Of The Pants test feels good but its probably because I know what it looks like. LOL

I hope nothing happens to the wheels (I dont have locks). Fortunately for me my office has a gated security perimeter and my neighborhood is gated as well and I park in the garage. With all that said it would be really sad to see this car on blocks.

Thanks for the complements. I love the look and the ride. I had them rebalanced today (the first shop made a mess of the weights) and I was cruzin at about 85-90 with no shake and it was smooth.

The handling feels great and I honestly dont notice the ride being rougher like I would have thought.

Thanks again all.

nefarious986 05-14-2012 10:30 PM

Hmm .. what tire profiles are you guys running ? My front definitely rubs when doing lock to lock turns.

They definitely look nice, but if you're planning to do AX or trackdays with the car .. I would say go 18 max.

jcb986 05-15-2012 04:12 AM

17's to small...19's just a little to big...18's just right.
