Air Meter
 

I am trying to buy a 2000 Boxter. I had a pre-inspection done because when cold start it belches black smoke and runs rich and rough for about 30 sec's then smoothes out. I was told I need a new mas air meeter. That doesn't make sense because the roughness only lasts for a few seconds, but if I do need one there is two part #'s for these on for e-accelerator and one without. The moror is a 2.7 with tiptronic. Can anyone shed some light on this?

I don't know which one you would need, but have another option you might try. I just had a problem with mine and the shop that I took it to told me that I could try having them clean it. They said it works 50% to 60% of the time, especially if the problem isn't bad. My brother is a mechanic (non_Porsche) and said that he has a success rate of about 80 to 90% on vehicles as a whole. Having it cleaned cost me a little over $200 instead of much more to have it replaced. Hope that helps.

All the '00 and later cars are egas - no direct linkage between the accelerator and the throttle body - drive-by-wire. You need the one for egas cars.

The car doesn't have an Air/Fuel meter in the classic K-Jetronic sense. Instead, it uses a Mass Airflow Sensor in the intake plenum. The DME (computer) does the rest.

You can try to remove the MAF and clean it with a spray MAF cleaner. This works maybe 50% of the time. $200 for a MAF cleaning is VERY high, almost the cost of a new unit. This is a pretty easy DIY, you just need an anti-tamper Torx driver or bit. Takes maybe 45 min. max. Lots of How-To's here - use the search function.

It could be the MAF, but could also be a number of other things such as O² sensors, Tiptronic fault, etc.

If you have an OBDII code reader, you could pull the codes and see if the car is throwing any minor ones that don't necessarily cause a MIL.
