Boxster S RS Spyder Now Official

Well, it is now official, a Boxster S RS RS Spyder is on the way. Try this link:

http://www.motorauthority.com/cars/porsche/porsche-boxster-rs-60-spyder/

All this makes me believe that the facelift is really going to arrive later than March '08, more like September '08 as others are projecting.

I have to say I'm pretty disappointed in Porsche and their 'special additions'. Seems like the Porsche Design Cayman and this Boxster could pretty much be ordered the same way if you pick the options (minus the nameplate). If they are going to go through the effort to produce a special addition why not drop a 3.6L or 3.8L engine in it and make it really special, don't just select a combination of options that are already available.

At least give it wheels or something that you can't otherwise get. Doesn't seem so special to me.

I do realize they are trying to model it after the old Spyder but still, they could take it a bit further.

So do I.

I'm disappointed too, that these new special Porsches just have BNG. (Bold New Graphics)

Stock, yes, the '08 S reaches 295HP. Porsche engineers yet again meet the claim that a Boxster will never replace the HP in a stock 911. Give us 325!

Wow, I like it! This special edition actually has some bespoke touches that haven't been seen before. The missing hood over the gauges is a little funky, but I could live with that, depending on the price.

I love the carrerra red interior, although it looks pink in that first link. I've seen Carrera red in person before and it's not pink at all.

If porsche can get the price right (around $60,000) I might step up, as I'm afraid I'm not going to like the 2009 body style.

But then... I do want the newer engines... argh....

The color combo is aboslutely gorgeous!!!! But as everyone said, you can order it that way as an regular, or S. Anyone notice the top is also red? I like the instrument cluster, but I like different anyway.

Well, there's quite a few items on there that you couldn't just order:

- exhaust (possibly--people seem to think it's not just PSE)
- carrera red interior (porsche exclusive)
- fancy schmancy shift knob (porsche exclusive)
- gauge hood delete (porsche exclusive?)
- door sills
- perforated leather steering wheel (porsches exclusive?)

and there's probably other things I didn't notice.

Actually there are items on this edition that I do not believe can be ordered on a regular production Boxster S.

1. Exhaust System - This differs from the current Sport Exhaust System as it actually increases the car by 8 horsepower, whereas the current optional Sport Exhaust does not increase horsepower. Quite frankly are you really going to notice 8 horsepower?
Yes, the sound is great but so is the sound on the Standard and Optional Sport Exhaust Systems.

2. Perforated Steering Wheel and Gauge Cluster are also unique to this Edition. Not sure I like them, but my guess is that we may be getting a preview of the 2009 facelifted Boxster cluster.

3. Badges and Door Sill graphics, yes unique, but really who cares. Not too thrilling that you are xxxx of 1960 made.

4. Red Interior is very polarizing (some love it, some hate it), but if you don't like it, an alternative choice of dark grey natural leather in conjunction with a black roof will also be available for the Edition.

All the other items are not really unique to the Edition, such as an aluminum colored center console and gear shift, the red tail-lights (if not, you can certainly order them through Porsche parts), and the front air dam, is the front half of the Sport Design Package.

In my opinion the perfect car they could have come up with is the new DFI engine in the current body-style. Now that would have been a great transition car, and as close as a new Boxster could come to perfection in my opinion.

I listened to the sound clip for the exhaust system on the new RS and it sounds a lot like my PSE.

Heck, maybe I "picked-up" 8 HP's this past April when I had it put in. My butt-dyno actually confirms this too!

I bet some of those options (like the exhaust and the steering wheel) turn up in the Tequipment brochure!
Geez, even if Porsche doesn't want to put 911 power in a Boxster, I sure wish they'd give us a real RS model: significant weight reduction, sport suspension with some adjustment, a limited slip, option deletes like A/C, some more down-force, and R compound tires.
That would be one smokin little Spyder!
