Good plan! You won't regret it.

Id like to come down from Toronto but I am told the way down is completely dominated by trucks and more trucks throwing rocks that will leave some serious battle scars on my black Boxster!!! Is this the case??

Lots of bikes make their way down there

On one of the bike forums I frequent, a link to
a picture of a tractor trailer unit with its trailer
crossing the solid line...the turns r 2 tight for some of the
trucks driving thru there.....
BUT.....318 turns in 11 miles......still makes me want to go

95 and 81 are quite often used by trucks. i've driven them several times and it's not that bad. yes sometimes little rocks and pebbles are thrown up, but no more than any other major interstate that i've encountered.

it's not enough to keep me from making my way down there a few times a year.

Maryville, TN is the best closest place to stay with many options. Chain hotels are around 80 to 100 a night, nice clean older motor motel rooms for <50. Plenty of restaurants, bars etc. Townsend, TN is at the foot of Smoky Mountains national park and has a few motels at a decent price, or even some very high end places if you prefer that.
