i have the 3rd shift knob, and love it.
they all should be a quick swap.
as for the side grilled, pull yours out and spray them, i did it when i first got my car, but then changed back to black. very simple

I have the second option. So I obviosuly like it and have a carbon fiber theme going.

I have that 3rd aluminum head shifter as well. It is really comfortable, and looks good. I am not sure about the silver vents on a black car, try photoshopping it first.

I just snapped these a few minutes ago. I have not actually seen to many other boxsters with this kind of shifter.
(And please excuse the mess.)

IMO there isn't much to understand. Either you like it or you don't. Obviously I like it. It is just like colors or anything else; some are preferable some are not.....
