Ok, whats the problem ?

bmussatti 10-23-2007 04:35 PM

Come on Blkboxster...how do you go from a Porsche to a Pontiac? I know they both begin with "P" but, really. :)

400 HP. Horsepower...smoreshpower!

Adam 10-23-2007 04:36 PM

They may have 400 hp, but the LS2 Goats also weigh about 4,000 lbs. I see them pretty often at a local drag strip. They're ok, but they aren't super quick and of course they can't turn.

rule1 10-23-2007 04:36 PM

The ? I have is why would you sell your 986 for a GTO ?!!

We all know that the GTO or the american 400 hp it represents is a different kind of beast than the Boxster. I, like most on this forum, really enjoy the Boxster. But I would be suprised if it was the favorite ride for everyone.

I dont mean that as an elitest comment at all, not everybody likes small sports cars better than big-engine cars, and thats cool. I remember the days of muscle cars, and it was an awful lot of fun to go fast in a straight line. So get behind the wheel of a big V-8 and see if that makes you smile more than your Boxster, its all about fun guys,

Ed

unklekraker 10-23-2007 05:15 PM

blk...i'm so disappointed at you :(

your choice went from C32 AMG to Pontiac GTO   :D

You mentioned that you got bored now on your boxster and you had it for 3 years....have you really driven it the way it supposed to be? I'm just asking *flame suit on*

There are guys who's into HP and there are guys who's into less HP but fun to drive

rule1 10-23-2007 05:22 PM

Thats fine, I am all about everyone buying american cars since I work at a Ford assembly plant. But I have this disscussion almost everyday at work and the bottom line is American sports cars dont compare with German sports cars!!!!!!!

If you didn't care about what we thought....(as you stated) you wouldn't be here telling us what you are getting and petitioning our support and opinions. Are you kidding me, a Pontiac GTO? Weren't you going to get a Mercedes C32 AMG or was that just a dream or fantasy? I just feel like you want something from a car that you are just not going to get. There is nothing "better around the corner" that is going to fix your problem --- and a GTO is certainly not the class of any german car. I dont mean clutch popping, 0-60 times, (call me a poser!) but I care about the reason for owning a Porsche. The refinement, the history and the passion of a truly legendary automaker, not just some plastic Pontaic crap.

You are one strange cookie.

AUDIOGUY 10-23-2007 05:49 PM

One of the products the dealer I work for is Pontiac. The GTO is a tremendous let down. Get a Vette if you want 400 hp. The GTO is not designed to go fast any other way than straight. Handling is soft and shaky. There is alot of cowl shake. The gear box feels like there are rocks crushing each time you change gears. Sitting in the car feels like you are commanding a boat. Brakes are good. I would compare this car to driving a BMW 3 series not a Porsche.

At least the vette feels nimble and well balanced.

GTO = GTNO!!

racer_d 10-23-2007 05:59 PM

I would prefer a Caddy CTS-V (same 400hp, but better brakes, suspension and chassis) to a GTO.. "if" I was forced to choose. Luckily i am not forced, and therefore free to look for another Porsche!

Grizzly 10-23-2007 06:15 PM

I'm a musclecar guy through and through, so I completely understand the draw to a 400 horsepower straightline hammer, but the GTO? Dude, it looks just like the Sunbird the 16 year old girl up the street drives. If you're going to buy a musclecar, buy a cool one. There are so many better choices out there, I don't even know where to start. Let's see...CTS-V, Vette, Mustang, new Camaro, new Challenger, etc, etc, etc. Even the Magnum and Chrysler SRT8s are better alternatives.

Rule 1 hit it right on the head; there's a reason they didn't sell many and scrapped the program almost immediately.

nola911 10-23-2007 06:32 PM

Umm, guys, I think this was an April fools joke, maybe a Halloween prank? No, I got it. Maybe a gang banger stole his computer and posted here. Seriously, when I think Pontiac GTO, I think a skinny kid with boxers out, wife beater t-shirt, and a red gang bandana on his head. I also think of my mother in law's surprise visits into town in her Grand Prix.

Maybe we are biased, right? I bet if you post the same question on the Pontiac forum, at least half would still choose the Porsche or Mercedes. If you want speed, pony up the extra 8 and get a real engine- v12 cl600. They are often on ebay for less than 30.

I have a feeling you posted this because you knew it would get a lot of responses and you wanted your ebay link to get the publicity. At least I hope so!

super66 10-23-2007 06:39 PM

I actually think pontiac did a great job re-releasing the 1997 Chevy Monte Carlo as the new Pontiac GTO.............ewwwwwwwwwwwwww.......

unklekraker 10-23-2007 07:15 PM

dude, go ahead and sell your car for horsepower but I highly suggest for you to check this one out before jumping in to...what was that car again?

http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/13835-supercharger-still-sale-didnt-go-ebay.html

I think the airfare is worth it if you live close by the owner :D

ichiro75 10-23-2007 07:17 PM

Gto

blkboxster, I like your idea of selling your Boxster and buying a GTO. You should also consider selling your Cayenne and get a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is a much nicer SUV than the Cayenne.

bmussatti 10-24-2007 04:50 AM

Blkboxster, if you want HP, drive your Mercedes. How can you be bored with your Boxster? It has less than 17,000 miles. How many miles have you driven it during your 3-year relationship. You need to drive it more. Become one-with-it. Say to yourself, "Be the Boxster"! Now go do the right thing! :)

Do you think maybe she is cheating on you? :(

Brucelee 10-24-2007 05:46 AM

I sat in a new GTO the other day. I was impressed with the car from that perspective.

I understand they are wicked fast.

Enjoy and welcome back if you ever get another Box.

Good luck.

:)

Kirk 10-24-2007 08:58 AM

Here are my two cents, for what it's worth. I understand the appeal of the GTO. I think I just saw in Car and Driver this year that the GTO was the biggest bang for the buck regarding horsepower. It's the cheapest 400 Hp you can buy, especially now on the used market with low demand. Just make sure you're getting the later model (I think it's got a fake hood scoop). Wasn't the first year of manufacturing just 350 Hp or something?

If you like torque and squealing tires, then the GTO seems like the way to go. Back in my high school days this would have been my pick. But I demand more from my cars now. I don't want to just go fast in a straight line. I want a car that is refined inside, comfortable, sexy looking, and can handle the twisties too. The Boxster you have can do these things MUCH better than the GTO.

Switching from looking at the Mercedes to the Pontiac I believe is probably driven ultimately by price and the bang for the buck that the GTO offers. Be careful by just looking at the dollars. I think you ultimately may be very disappointed if you just focus on that.

Has Pontiac build quality gotten any better since I last sat in one a few years ago?

They make so few cars compared to Chevrolet that the interiors are always falling apart after a few years of normal wear and tear.

I know our boxsters are filled with plastic inside (dash, doors, center console if one didn't pay a bunch more for leather) but it feels or seems like the quality of the plastic is better.

I can never ever go back to US made cars. In fact, I don't even want another Japanese car for my sedan-daily-driver. It's gonna be a 5 Series BMW.

American cars just feel cheap to me. Call me a snob, but I can't stand the way they look, feel, or the quality of the interior parts. Corvettes included.

Good luck with the Pontiac purchase. If you keep it a couple of years and trade it when you are bored again it won't be a decision you have to live with all that long.

Hopefully, we'll see you right back here with another newer, faster boxster!

CJ_Boxster 10-24-2007 11:39 AM

If i were in your shoes i'd buy a used 996 if you want more power.

All I can do is hang my head in shame. I wanted a GTO real bad, but now that im not in highschool anymore it just seems like the silliest idea ever. Sure it has back seats, and 400HP, but I would not be near as happy if I had bought it over the box. Heres my suggestion if you want something cool and have to have power.

The 15 grand plus the 6 grand turbo kit comes to 21,000. It puts 360 to the wheels and doesnt look like a giant turd.

Im trying to be constructive, but its like assisted suicide. Your never gonna be happy cause when you get 400HP your gonna want 500... I feel sorry for you.

I already have A 500 hp car so i wont need it, So dont feel bad, i was thinking about a Z, but idk i just dont like them.

Burg Boxster 10-24-2007 02:23 PM

[thinking out loud ;) ] something tells me a decision won't have to be made between a GTO or C32 AMG if the BIN = reserve price.....

I'd love to see '99s selling for $22K (or anything above $20K), but it's really a function of supply and demand. Lots of '99s out there as well as '97, '98, '00, '01, '02, '03, and '04 plus the Ss. Oh yeah.... and the recent R&T article ('99 s/b sub $19K IIRC) doesn't really 'help' either. :o

[/thinking out loud]

boggtown 10-24-2007 02:23 PM

See, proving my point. Why do you need a 400HP car then?

Grizzly 10-24-2007 02:55 PM

Dude, I've been thinking about your dilemma and going over your older threads as well as the videos you've posted. You seem to like straight-line horsepower, 0-60 runs and the ability to smoke the tires at will. Maybe I have a couple of possibilities for you...

boggtown 10-24-2007 03:02 PM

Ha, Sell the box, buy a junker trans am and put a new $12,000 engine in it from jegs. Youd have a grand total of $12,400 (not including labor, but its an american car so thatd be like 400 bucks for everything at any mechanic nation wide, so really $12,800) and you can do burnouts and straight line stuff all day.

pteam 10-24-2007 04:16 PM

Seriously those last 2 youtube videos are all you need if you want burnouts!

IF you want 400hp you should get a used vette, for the price thats your best choice. GTO's look like every other pontiac out there, and you'll see 16 year old kids driving them and kids in subarus trying to race you at EVERY stop light, thats probably not what you want in the long term.
