New engine required???

Hi Guys,

I was just reading GT magazine, and found a little section about the Boxsters having engine trouble when they get a little older. Apparently engines are beginning to suffer slipped liners I'm not sure what that is exactly, but it doesn't sound good as the engine requires replacing once this happens.

A quote at the end of the article:
"it would appear Porsche's cost-cutting exercises went a little too far when it came to developing the Boxster's (and 996's) water-cooled flax-six, and manufacturing problems are beginning to materialise, including issues with cylinder liners"

Does anyone know about this kind of thing, or if it is a serious problem?

Actually that was a problem for newer motors, and mostly 1997.

I have a 1997 with 135,000 miles. Just drove it, love it, still smiling an half hour later.

It was only a ten minute ride.

Looks like you need to cut and paste the links.

oh yeah... i know that smile all too well

The first article actually states "Porsche has not divulged exactly how many engines this actually occurred in other than a broad range of 2.5 engines in late 1998 -early 1999"

I have a late '98 2.5 *gulp*

But your mileage is the what detemines if you have a sleeved motor.

It seems they go bad pretty quickly.
