Hi, I have a 986 and to remove the boot you must wiggle it a little and pull it out , it is only holding with 6 plastic clips that are part of the plate holding the leather in place.

Then check if there is a screw holding the knob in place , mine was only press fitted over the shift pin, loosen the screw if any and then pull on the knob like you want to brake it off and you are done my friend.

pry off the sides of the orginal boot with your hands pulling up on the edges.
lower the top.
remove your shoes.
facing the windshield, place one foot on each seat
place one hand on the windshield header and the other on the old shift knob.
Pull straight up on the shift knob and will come right off.
The leverage of standing over the shift knob makes it very easy to pull off.

slip the new knob on the lever, tighten the allen screw on the collar and snap down the boot.

Ah thanks guys. That "standing on seats and pull" solution sounded brutal but worked very nicely

remove shift knob 6 speed press fit

For those press fit knobs that absolutely will not pull off. I tried it all to no avail. I had to find another way to get it off. Since I had a new one, I could afford to trash the old one. I removed the plaque on top(popped it off). I then took a box cutter and cut the leather boot cover at backside until it came off. Then took a box cutter and sliced from top to bottom the shifter until it peeled off. Cuts easy. Very quick.

Standing up works...never pull on the knob with your face in target range...best way to knock out a bunch of teeth when it lets go; just keep the family jewels out of the way.

Ask him how he knows? HaHa.

I just read this post and got "in the position" and it pulled off without too much effort.
When I previously tried to pull up from the side, with what seemed like a lot of force, it did not budge. The pulling straight up is the secret.

Thank you everyone for this useful info. Full set of teeth and jewels intact
