Cool Pic. I live in Colorado, formerly Chicago area, and drive my Boxster all winter. As a former Mustang owner I can state the Box is way better in snow. Just get the summer tires off and replace with good snows all around. Heck, it's a German car and it does snow there! It becomes a "depth" of snow issue! Not traction...the Boxster is fine with that.

Plus, Porsche was thoughtful enough to make the bottom of the car flat, so if the snow is deep enough, you can get a running start and just slide your way around.

The wheels have a lot of Turbo look to them...The pic is the original '97. 16" wheel. Actually I thought they had a good look...just too small to fill the fender well.

I drive all winter in Wisconsin

Just get some good snow tires. A hardtop is also nice to protect the ragtop. My Boxster MY2001 is the best handling car I've ever driven in the snow.

I have winter tires on 16 inch wheels and a hardtop and have driven the car in the winter as a daily driver.

Deep snow is a problem. Looking up at 18 wheelers as they throw out a 10' wall of snow at you can be intimidating. Salt trucks....

Bottom line I drive prefer to drive mine in the winter on sunny days with salt free roads.

This some good info, I am about to enter my first snowy winter with the Boxster. I am going to get some snow tires as well.
But,
Is there a huge difference between the effectiveness of 16" and 17" rims for winter (snow) driving? (Besides pricing)

well you want them not to be wide, so 1 in will probably be a better choice, cheaper to get wheels, and cheaper to get tires.

Yes you want as much sidewall height as you can get and the most narrow tire.

Think of a flat bottomed boat, which hull goes deeper into the water?

A narrow one or a wide one?
