Collant dripping 2000 Boxster
2000 Boxster
I walked outside and found my boxster was leaking coolant/water. It seemed to have leaked about 3/4 quart. It was coming from the passenger side (front side of back wheel) and the middle. I opened the trunk to see the coolant/water level and it was below low. I put some water in it and drove for about 5 minutes and then parked. 3 hours later, only 1 drip. Any ideas or recommendations? I called a mechanic and he said to keep an eye on it. Anyone experience someone similar? I'm planning a 200mile road trip tomorrow, not sure what to do??? thanks, |

check the carpet lining in the trunk...if it's all wet, then your coolant tank may be leaking. Otherwise, I would first change the coolant cap. Make sure you have the coolant cap that ends with part number O1. The old style is OO and can leak. So I think part number is something like 996.....01. It's like $20 or so.
I would not travel 200 miles with a coolant problem until I figure it out. You are better off getting a cheap rental car. |
I had a similar eevent occur, leak was in the same area and almost all the coolant drained out. It turned out to be the cap on the coolant tank. Cheap repair.

Had the same problem. I replaced the cap even though I had the newer cap. Had the system flushed and bled all the air out and replaced the thermostat. It took 1 full day for the work and 1 full day for porsche to get the parts in.
Mine started as a slight leak, but once air was in the system it got hot fast. I would rent-a-car for the road trip if the box is your only option. |
What about the pump/
How many miles does it have on it...
At 60K miles the water pump has a reputation of giving up...Mine did at 63K miles and started with a drip and went to a full leak!...Some lady pulled up to me at a stop light and told me my car was leaking green fluid...I did a bee-line for my mechanics shop... He told me 60k is the typical swapping point for a water pump.. If you have the old cap you need to get the new one as well....if you open the trunk and the cap is blue,you have the old one. the new one is black...If you have a leak in the trunk with the black cap, the you need a new tank, because you have probably cracked it. My mechanic tells me that it happens. |

I am trying to figure out the black cap.
Where did you get the black cap from. If you got it from Porsche did it come in a plastic bag with a part number on it - if so what is the full part number. |
Compared my old blue 00 cap with my new black 01 cap. Old 00 internals show a obvious round topped cylinder with a screened top when held up side down. New 01 internals also have a simular round top cylinder with screen top but also includes an elongated cylinder that envelopes and extends beyond the rounded part of the inner cylinder. Sorry, that's the best way I could describe it. Color may only be a difference in the manufacturer. My black 01 cap does not have a Porsche # on the outside like my blue original 00. I believe both are made by the company named "Blau" as they both have a similar insignia.

Thats odd, i just called my porsche dealer and the part guy told me the Blue cap is newer and ends in 01, the black cap is old and ends in 00..... so blue is newer, it he wrong or right or did i just read everything here too fast?

My "new" cap is blue too. Ends in 01. Hope that helps ;)

Ah ok, I just checked my cap and it ends with 00 and is blue, i called the dealer back and asked if he his sure the new one is blue as well and he said its blue and not black. We shall see when i pick it up in 15 minutes, he didnt actually go in the back to look at it for me

OH GREAT, I am at work reading this thinking that I have the black cap,,,,,and I know its new....
Now I will have to go home and check to make sure....I may have messed it up. But I know I have the new cap.. be back after I get home. :troll: |
After my catastrophic coolant leak the new cap the dealer put on my car is blue. It seems to me that when I drove the Cayman at the track the cap on that car was black. I think as long as the number has an 01 you are good no matter what color it is.

Im talking about the cap in the rear trunk beside the oil cap....
And yes the new one I have is Black. I checked it...The old one is the stock blue one. No part number on it though... But I do know that it is a new type cap. |
the black cap i bought has part number 99610644701 on the piece of plastic wrap but not on the cap itself. cap is made by Blau. honestly, i don't really care what color it is as long as the part number is correct.
