help! boxster misfires

Hi everyone,

I'm a new member with a big Boxster problem. I've got a 2000 Boxster. Battery was dead so we jumpstarted it. Now the problem is that it is misfiring and lacking consistency in power (I'm not certain but the car may have simply rolled out of our garage, because using the gas pedal didn't seem to matter.)

After two months of trying to diagnose the problem, our mechanic came back saying we needed to replace the computer, and that the throttle body may also need to be replaced. Apparently sometimes the car runs well – but never consistently over an extended period of time. In their words:

"The control unit in the Boxster will not store faults. We have created situations that we know should set a fault, and the unit will not recognize them. The vehicle seems to be running at a preset value that we also can't seem to control. We have driven the vehicle and tested it under every type of scenario you could imagine - hot, cold, sitting, rain, short drives, in the shop, on the parking lot, etc. There isn't adequate surge protection that could protect from a voltage spike from jump starting or the alternator spiking voltage."

They speculated that perhaps jumpstarting created a voltage spike (especially if the leads were reversed) that fried the computer. The worry is that they are not sure how it happened, and they’re quoting me about $2000 for the computer and all the labor they’ve put in, plus around $1200 for the parts throttle assembly if needed.

The car can't be moved easily as we don't know of any reliable Porsche mechanics in the Annapolis , Maryland area.

Should I just suck it up and pay for the repair and hope for the best?

Thanks in advance...

Ed

I don't know of too many shops in the Annapolis area, but the local DC board (www.dorkiphus.com) is loaded with DIYers and folks from around Va, DC and MD. Maybe they can recommend a shop for you. May also try Chesapeake PCA (they are annapolis/baltimore porsche club region)for additional advise.
