new boxter owner--have I damaged my car?

Hi everyone,

I just registered after reading many threads and see what a helpful group of people are here.

I recently bought a new Boxter and I asked the salesman about limitations during the break-in period (500 miles). He mentioned no sustained highway driving, that is, vary the speed for the 1st 500 miles, but nothing else.

I just read a recommendation on this list to not exceed 4200 rpm during the 1st 2000 miles. Unfortunately, I have already done this a couple of times (car has ~200 miles on it). Have I damaged anything by doing this?

You didn't hurt a thing. The engines are actually broken in at the factory. It's just a guideline porsche dreamed up. Hardly anyone can keep a high revving car like the boxster under 4,200 rpm all the time for the first 2k miles. Just take it kind of easy and don't track it or go to redline in every gear for the first 2k miles. Enjoy your box.

Hey Adam, missed your post last night...took a break to watch Scary Movie 3. Time would've been better spent hanging out here, although I did get a good nap out of it

I have the 2004 50th Anniversary edition--I was a sucker for the extra (albeit minimal) hp and frills. I'm thrilled with it though. Just wish it would stop raining so I could take it out without mucking it up.

Yeah, I love it! Tough decision between the cocoa brown top/interior and black/dark grey (which I got because it was in stock and I am impatient ), but it's the performance that's most important--and it's definitely got that.

Hopefully get some pictures later today--if the rain would only let up for a few moments. Waiting and pacing the floor...gah!

Doing my best to keep my picture off that wall--a blur of silver is all you would see anyway, compliments of my petite, but amazingly heavy, foot.

Take it easy the first few kilometers during the break-in period.

So don't do trackdays yet with sustained rpm levels above 6500 lap over lap over lap but an occasion rev up the scale won't harm it. Personally I know no-one who didn't rev a sporty car in the break-in period. Had a friend with an e46 m3. 500km holding back and then he couldn't handle it any more and touched the rev limiter in second gear.

And when its fully driven in, rev the hell out of it ! During the warm-up period (15 minutes or so) I keep it below 3000 rpm. When its fully warmed up stay above 5000rpm. They are ment for this :-)

Thanks for this info Mark. That's exactly what I did...revved it up past 4200 a couple of times while going down the highway, already warmed up. Couldn't help myself but certainly will wait until past the break-in to do anything more extreme.

If you're going to break it, break it now instead of later after the warranty is expired I"m sure that its fine, just try to keep it under wraps until the 2k miles. (Of course thats easy for me to say)

If it makes you feel better about falling for those extra hp and frills, the 50th ani edition Boxster is actually cheaper as a package than if you trick out a stock car with all the same options. So actually, you saved a few thousand by getting the special edition.
