Bearing replacement?

Has anyone brought their car into Porsche for a rear passenger wheel bearing replacement. I think that is the problem causing this womp womp sound from the rear passenger side. I know that this could also cause damage to the wheel hub. Does anyone know how much this will cost me if I bring it to Porsche.

What year and model?

For my 2001 the bearing is about $30. The procedure involves removing the entire wheel bearing housing, heating it to 100 degrees C, and using a press.

Yes. I had a rear wheel bearing replaced at about 30K miles. First I heard a ticking sound that I thought might my valves. Then it progressed into a roaring sound and I thought it might be my tires being too worn. But it was a rear wheel bearing. Here is what my dealer charged me:

5.50 hours labor

$577.50 Labor
$112.18 parts part # 999-053-042-10 Description SS 99905305405

Total $689.68

I had the rt rear replaced last month by the dealer:

$ 53.21 part 99905305405
$357.00 labor
----------
$410.21 total

BTW, this is not covered by CPO. At the time my car had 35K on it but it seems the bearing has been singing for the 20K I've owned the car, I just didn't realize it. Much quieter now.

Thanks everybody. I think I hav e an idea on what to expect on Tuesday. It sucks not being able to drive my car this weekend but thats the way it is. Just one more question for husker and socal. Why does the cost for doing the same job vary so much?

Porsche dealer. 500-600 bucks.

Some indies with aftermarket parts will be less.

Labor rate and parts prices vary greatly.

I have come to realize that the prices these Porsche dealers charge do vary a lot. I can understand why the labor rate on Long Island a high cost of living area or in California would be higher than in Omaha, but why such a big difference in the price of parts? That should be almost a constant. Although labor always is the biggest cost component of any repair.

Sorry, I didn't see your question for me and husker. I think it must be a function of the cost of living where you live. Long Island where I live is a stupidly expensive place to live. That's the only reason I can come up with. But then why is my BMW dealer so much more reasonable?

My local dealer is very expensive and I won't go there anymore unless I have to. They have charged me:

$10/qt for Mobil 1 0W-40 when Walmart was selling it for $5.97 (meanwhile my BMW dealer only charged me $5.40/qt for Mobil 1 5W-30 and the repair reciept notes 55 gallon drum) You know these guys buy it in bulk.

They charged me $100 per tire to mount and balance by new tires claiming that the Boxsters are tricky cars and if the wheels aren't balanced perfectly you'll get vibration.

Hi, Dealer quoted me $387.00 for a water pump here in Montreal and wait the gasket is another $10.00, screwwwwwwwwwwwww them i got one on eBay for $132.00 shipped at my door.

The reason they charge so much money is to keep the average working grease loving guy away from their cars and keep the clean cut have no idea you are screwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwing me over loyal customers in their shops.
I never shower on the weekends so watch out Porsche I'm here for the long run

I forgot to mention the Service Mgr felt sorry for me since the repair wasn't covered under CPO so he charged the labor at "warranty rates". Not sure how much of a difference that is from std rates, some of the other smarter forum members may know. The warranty rate may have been the biggest factor in my low cost.

Certainly our cost of living is lower in Omaha and that would also be reflected in the labor rate. My dealer (Woodhouse) seems very focused on providing good customer service. I generally dismiss pricing parts there because I figure they can't be cheaper than Sunset, Suncoast, etc., but the SM has mentioned in conversations that they are competitive. May be why my bearing was less than SoCals price. I will compare Woodhouse's price in the future.

Thanks everybody. I am not a big fan of the cost associated with bringing my car to the dealership either. However, the Champion dealership in Pompano Beach has been pretty good to me with regards to replacing a bad cat that was still under factory warranty. Also had a problem with a hub that went bad after replacing front brakes and rotors. I think a valet guy hit a bump and damaged the hub and Champion discounted the repair and also warranteed the rotor that went bad. I just did not realize it at the time. The guy I deal with over there is honest and that is worth the additional cost in many ways. I just wanted an idea of what it would run me because I just dropped some money on tires and a new top.

Sorry Paul, I did not notice your question. I have a 2000 Boxster.

Dealers are ripping off~

I payed 35 dollars for the bearing at pelican parts and got it fixed by some guys who work on BMW's, hey charged me 100US

Total 135 dollars. (just the bearing not the hub).
