tiptronic breakdown

Hi,

My 2001 boxster tiptronic transmission (65 miles) broke down. I got a quote of around 6k $s to get it replaced.

I don't know what eactly wrong with it, but the shop said they will try to repair it if it can be repaired but hey wouldn't know if that is the case unless they teardown the transmission.

Please let me know what kind of options do I have, to save money on this repair.

Thanks.

I don't know if the S and base share the same Tiptronic but this could be an option;

Just dropping and reinstalling a tranny shouldn't cost more then $1k. Many of us have had to had the RMS replaced,which requires dropping the tranny and it's cost anywhere from $900-$1.1k in labor.

Is it recommended to get the used transmission.
How does one make sure it is in good condition?.

What were the symptoms before it broke down? My 2001 tip seems to be lurching when going through stop signs, etc. It feels like it downshifts and upshifts really fast and makes the car lurch. I don't know if this is normal.

Someone else described the problem symptoms.

Odd Transmission Problem

I saw all these a day before, and the car stopped at a stop light, I was able drive it to a parking place only after restarting the car ( couple of stops later).

There was oil leak under the car.
