Removing cats

I was talking to a guy from vertex who told me if i remove my 2 cats that are near my engine that i would gain at least 10 or more hps .. Has anyone have done this I am assuming that the porsche has 2 pre-cats and then 2 cats. Can someone clear this up and if it is true that i will gain some noticable power gain

Call the guy back and ask if they have a money back guarantee if you check engine light comes on once the cats are removed.

he told me that if you put headers in you have to extend the 02 sensor wires but if i remove the the pre-cats and don't do headers it will not set off the cel light or engine light the guy i was talking to was a gilbert. No offense but why would he give me money back on advice . He said that the pre-cats restricted the air flow and if i removed them that i would gain more hp but he didn't sell me sports cats or anything just told me that it wouldn't set off the 02 sensors.

He wasn't trying to sell you a set of headers? The cats are part of the exhaust manifold, unless you're doing a bunch of fabrication, the only way to remove the cats is with headers.

The car's computer is looking for a difference between the upstream and downstream O2 sensor signals. If they both read the same thing, it'll throw a check engine light so I assume he's telling you to place the second sensor after to second cat? More fabrication.

I believe that removing cats is illegal in NJ.

It is illegal, and you will also get a check engine light.

2nd set, not first.

Hey guys, I believe that tech was speaking of the 2nd set part of the downstreem pipes with the Cats on them. NOT the set closest to the headers. EPIQ makes a set of these with bung holes for the sensors to still work and not throw off the computers settings. They say it will still pass emitions. Plus it's an easy bolt-on job, so you can always reverse it if needed. Yes, it is illegal on all states that I know of. But if you pass emitions, how could they tell unless they were underneath your car. Check out these pipes at EPIQ and read the discription.

Those aren't the pre cats. Precats are the ones nearest to the engine, as you stated in the first post.

Yes we know. But the tech that he was talking to most likely got it wrong. He got his CATs all mixed up.

blue ,

I just repeated what the guy told me don't kill the messenger ...Like i said i wasn't sure really what he was talking about at first. He told me i really don't need to do headers to remove the cats and that i would gain hp. I am sorry if he was wrong but that is what he told me.

I'm just trying to clarify so everyone understands what parts we're talking about.

Unless I am mistaken, you are crapping up the air when you remove the cats.

Seems like that might be of concern.

Yes, true. But do we really need 2(pair) sets? Our cars have 4 Cats. on them total. Makes no sence to me. Why not just 2? I've never heard of any other car having this many.

I presume the car needs them to pass emissions, as I don't see Porsche wasting any money on stuff they would not need. Got to keep those margins up!

I do know that some Mazda's used to have 4, but not sure if that is still so.

Thanks!
