I want to look at my engine, how.....

do I get access to the engine cover?

I have a 2007 Boxster S. With the top up, I can't get access to the cover. Same with the top down. Is there a trick to this?

Also, what is 'put the car in service mode', mean?

Thanks,

Rob - a new Boxster owner (1 month)

Service Position is when the top moves about 12 inches (from closed position) and the rear cover pops up. Then I think you still need to remove a cover inside the engine bay area.

I saw the dealership do this last week when my car was in getting the PSE installed.

I think the engine looks really cool from the underside...when on a lift...not much to see from the top.

Rob,

Do you have an owners manual? The procedure to put the top in "Service Mode" is outlined in there. Let us know, if you need any more help.

I asked two people. They told me 'service mode' was when the top was about only an INCH from the closed position.

I tried this. Didn't work, as the engine cover was covered up by the fabric still.

I'll go try the new way.

As far as I can tell, it's NOT in the 987 manual; I'd really like a detailed description of how-to, that I can use on my '07. I backed up onto my ramps on Saturday to check things out from down below.

Had a scare at first, when I thought "holy ****************, everything is coated with a fresh covering of oil! Where's the leak??" But as soon as I touched it, it was hard and sticky, like a sort of enamel over everything - cosmolene or something similar, I guess?

Rob, I have found this website very helpful, the procedure is pretty simple.

go to RennTech.org
if not a member, join
access the Owner Manuals
look in the 2003 models on page 179

You are all correct = not in the newer 987 manuals , lol, "see your dealer"

Good luck,

Sorry Rob, I did not realize it is not included in the 987 owners manuel, that is pretty lame of Porsche to leave that out...
