Question for fellow Porsche aficionados

My buddy is looking for a C4S and came across this :

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?rdpage=thumb&car_id=218689308&dealer_id=55845403&car_year=1997&model=911&num_records=&make2=&start_year=1997&keywordsfyc=&keywordsrep=&engine=&certified=&body_code=0&fuel=&search_type=both&distance=25&make=POR&color=&min_price=&drive=&default_sort=priceDESC&max_mileage=&style_flag=1&sort_type=priceDESC&address=60195&advanced=&end_year=1997&doors=&transmission=&max_price=&cardist=12

What is so special about the 1997 C4S ? $100k for a 10 year old car ?

Sticker was only $77.5k ?

Is it because it is the last year of the air cooled 911’s ?

Thanks,

Nick

Hey NickCats-

'98 is the last year of the 993 air cooled 911, but this is definitely the last version of the car and no real changes from '97 to '98. My friend has a '96 C4S and is has a great following within the Pcar community. I have driven it hard and it is a lot of fun.

It is basically a 993 turbo without the turbo if that makes sense from the brakes to AWD system, wheels/tires, etc.

This car is definitely way overpriced compared to values in books, but try to find another '97 C4S with 1400 miles on it with these options. Someone with sick money that wants that car may pay for it or somewhere near it. Values for 993's are definitely silly right now, but this guy is trying to find the right buyer and work a deal is my guess. Your friend should be able to find a nice 993 C4S, well maintained, with varying mileage in the 40-55k range is my quick estimation.

Us Boxster guys would take the same 100k and go for a stacked 987S or Cayman S and take the extra 30-40k and do whatever right?

I think this is the first porsche the seller has ever sold so he probably thinks its worth 100,000 bucks... people make that mistake, Afew people see my boxster and think i paid 80k for it LOL of course i tell them the range of what i paid but its nice to think people think im in the higher class status... helps when the waiter or waitress at the resurant you valet'd at sees you get out the porsche, the refills just come as fast as anyone elses that day.

KBB says:

Kelley Blue Book Price $31,200 - $35,300
Original Retail Price (MSRP) $73,000
Original Invoice Price $62,962

Even if it was a Turbo, with those small miles and in pristine condition, it shouldn't fetch more than $80k and that would be pushing it. This particular 97 C4S (low miles, pristine) will never see more than $70k unless things have REALLY changed in the last couple of years -- and I was being generous with these numbers. Brucelee may be able to chime in with some more realistic numbers.

Amen to that, brother.

1400 miles is absurdly low though, eh? From the low miles and Chicago location, I suspect that this vehicle was parked next to the Ferrari in Cameron's dad's garage in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

You can poke around with Comps but on this kind of a car, it kind of depends on luck, ie a guy has the dough and HAS to have this particular car. You see this happen at classic auctions all the time, the price goes wild. Otherwise, cooler heads prevail and the price get to around the books on it.

I like this model but would not want to be the guy having to pay for repairs et al.

I am still looking for my dream 968 coupe with a bad engine.

Pref in black or red.

993's in general are overpriced, because they lay claim to being "the last aircooled" 911s. This holds a special meaning to certain buyers/owners. It is the most refined version of "the" porsche model.

This example has only 1500 miles. That makes it rare. Also the car is being sold by a dealer, vs a private sale, which means the price will be high.

The C4S is essentially a turbo without the turbo motor. It has the bigger brakes and suspension as well as the bodywork of the same vintage Turbo. Not sure of production run numbers, buy likely small.

My guess is we will see this car on several websites, will likely get pulled and reposted as well. Try to keep track of it. I would be shocked if it sold for anywhere close to that asking price. To the "right" person, I could see someone getting $60K for this car. More than that, well.. what did PT Barnum say about suckers?

It claims in the ad to have cashmere seats... that is why it is 100k!
Right...

Overpriced...imo

I have seen excellent examples for around 50k.

Give me a Box S and a used 540i sport for the same money.
