Well, after reading the pros and cons for a while, I finally decided to de-snork my 2001 today. Took all of 10 minutes (5 for the actual process and aother 5 to repair and band-aid my wrist that slit when I was pulling out the snorkel and not paying close enough attention to where my wrist was!). Been on a short drive and can only tell a difference in the sound when I get above 3800 or so RPM or so it seems. Nice sound when you step on it. Hey since you know how to take the grill on and off now you should put the updated grill on. It's only $8 from Sunset.

If your car is newer than an 01, you already have the updated grill that blinkwatt is talking about that has the 2 bottom louvres with the vents blocked off. This updated louvre, btw, is only of use if you keep the snork w/ the cup at the end inserted, as it brings the level of the airflow up to the level of the cup. If you take out the snorkel, it's better to have the old louvre style, as it allows less air to flow through due to the blocked off lower louvres.

If you really want an updated vent style, buy the 03+ one piece intake vents that need to be painted body color. They fit without issues to the older 986 intake assemblies.

Do you have any idea how much those run for? I have been thinking about it but don't know how much $$$ it would cost.

the diff is really nice for not costing anything, and theres a dyno showing a 5hp gain, so its even sweeter.
i desnorkeled mine as well and loved it, but then i got an intake so its even better (required desnorkel as well, but i had that off anyways

)

Hi blink, no- unfortunately, I'm not sure what they cost, as I havn't bothered to do this yet, but I know another boarder on rennlist named Marc Galefsky (sp?) has done this already on his 02, and said it fits without any modification. They come unpainted though, so you'd have to factor in the cost of the paintwork in addition to the part itself.

I got inspired to try it after your post, but failed. How hard do you push those little vents in on steps #2-4? I got the screw out and spent a bunch of time pushing on the vents trying to get them to move like the pictures show but to no avail.

The screw shows signs of being out before (slightly over-tightened). I thought maybe something had come loose and the original owner glued something in place? The snorkel is in there, so that's not what he was up to.

Hi Kelly,

It's a very firm push, don't be afraid to push it. If you break it, I understand they are reasonably cheap from Porsche if you have a dealer near you. And the snorkel itself requires a very hard pull to get it out, but once it lets go, it comes out quick, that's why I cut my wrist. Don't finesse the blind or the snorkel, and you should be fine. Yep, you're right, don't finesse it. I got it figured out, but it took more force then I ever would have thought I would use on the car.

Didn't cut my wrist, but when the snorkel came off (way easier than I thought), I ended up falling backwards and smashing the passenger peg of my motorcycle into my back. Ouch! Glad I was sorta squatted down there or I really would have gone flying.

Might be a dumb question, but is this only on the left side? or can you do botth sides?

It's only on the drivers side (US drivers side).

The parts were about 160-170 or so + paint if I remember correct, I liked the 03+ look muck better and am pleased with the outcome.

one side the cold air comes in to the eingine, other side is for warm air to escape pretty much, so to answer your Q, only one side, as that is the tube(snorkel) that goes inside your factory airbox

Is there a screw to remove to remove the vent in the 987 model?

I can not see a screw anywhere in my vent, and my dealer refuses to tell me how to remove the vent (grrrr)

The debri problem was fixed for the 987s, where there is a giant restrictor plate in the air intake to prevent objects from getting in.

From what I understand, this was not done for the 986 models and you are just as susceptible to debri as with the snorkel.

LOL, that's funny. Actually, folks with the 987 are pulling out the restrictor plate and leaving the snork in, because apparently, the gas mileage goes way down when you pull out the snork in the 987 for some reason.

I can't say I know much about this whole de-snorkling thing... but if I have a '98, should I be worried about debris being sucked in, even if I haven't de-snorkled? At some autocrosses there is quite a bit of dirt/dust that gets kicked up.
