The only way it could be harder on the clutch is if the lower engagement point caused the clutch to not fully disengage anymore. Either that, or they're thinking that the lessened amount of travel makes the clutch a bit more of an on/off switch.
It would be really hard to judge whether or not the lowered engagement point was really causing a physical change that lessened clutch life, versus people not driving the car properly with a shortened clutch travel or whatever.
