I had exactly this same problem (also in a 2002 Boxster S) until very recently when I had the service done on my car to replace all the parts that needed.

The clutch pedal was VERY stiff, and that was most likely due to a leaking clutch slave cylinder that was replaced. The feel of the clutch pedal travel was very grainy and rough, and that was due to the worn clutch disc and pressure plate that was affected. A new "clutch kit" was installed that included the clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and some related parts. In my car, the worm clutch disc also scored the flywheel, so I had a new OEM dual-mass flywheel installed.

The car drives like a dream now... and it's hard un-learning how I had to drive with that crappy clutch feel.
