I am planning on changing the resistors with the hack (change the resistors with a new resistor 0.5 ohm/100W). Is the resistor's function to increase the speed of the fan when the engine temp reaches a certain temperature? If this is true, will the fans work at low temp even with a bad resistor?
No. The resistor brings down the effect/voltage to the fan, and makes the fan run slower. The higher the resistance, the lower the effect/speed the fan gets. If you remove the resistor from the circuit, the fan will run at full speed no matter what.

Basicly the fan is connected with two circuits. At first the low speed circuit with the resistor is activated at a given temp (or with AC on), if temp increases more the high speed circuit (without reistor) is activated. So to sum up, if your resistors are broken, the fans will not run with AC on, or when they should run low speed. They will only come on at high speed when the engine gets really warm (around 96C i think)

A cheap generic 0.5 ohm 100w resistor works perfectly. Changed mine 5 months ago. Very easy fix.
