That sounds complicated.
Are you missing the little lever under the steering wheel that you "push down to unlock, pull out steering wheel, push lever back up to lock"? Like, literally, a two second process. Me thinks you're complicating it... unless you are trying that way and something IS wrong.
The only way I easier could describe the pedestrian process is to tell you to Google it. Seriously. You'll wonder what you were missing. Good luck.
