I saw a Cayman for sale two years ago that seemed too good to be true. Was it the one that got away, or did I dodge a bullet? Not a 986, I know, but thought I might get good answers here anyway.
There were several fishy elements: The guy was selling it "for his cousin" who had a different last name; the car did not pass CA emissions test; the registration was not current but had some temporary registration allowing it to be moved to get repairs, etc; and help me remember- what does it mean when the exhaust spits out a lot of water like this? Besides that and a scary "service now" engine light, otherwise it drove nicely and was great! 100K miles, and they were asking about $11K for it.
Oh, AND the CA title had already been signed over from the "cousin" owner to the guy selling it to me on the front of the title, but there was a place on the back where the new owner could sign it. I called the Illinois DMV and they said No, that title transfer would not fly in IL and I'd have to get a lawyer involved, etc. Weird…. So, I didn't go for it and I moved on. But should I have?
And can anybody tell me more from the VIN? WPOA29808U760777
